The Digital Mark II challenge has a postcode.
Of the 113 independent cinema screens in the Critical or Severe renewal bands, 81 are regional — 71.7%.
These are screens where the indicative renewal requirement equals ten years or more of modelled operating profit.
That matters because a cinema is more than a projector.
In many regional communities it is cultural infrastructure: somewhere to see Australian stories, international films, family films and major releases together on a big screen.
The renewal requirement is national.
The capital constraint is disproportionately regional.

129 independent cinemas. 318 screens.
That is the scale of the capital constraint identified by Digital Mark II.
At ICA’s central modelling scenario, these cinemas face an indicative digital infrastructure renewal requirement equivalent to five or more years of full modelled operating profit.
That is before that operating profit pays for tax, debt, working capital — or the other things cinemas need to replace: seating, sound, accessibility, air conditioning, foyers and building works.
Digital projection is essential infrastructure. But the capacity to replace it is not evenly distributed.
