Charlie Chaplin’s personal life was just as dramatic, turbulent, and headline-grabbing as his onscreen career was legendary. While he brought laughter to millions, his private life was marked by intense controversy, tragic downfalls, and eventually, a peaceful redemption.

Four Marriages and Early Controversies
Chaplin’s romantic relationships were a frequent source of public scandal. He had a distinct preference for much younger women, which led to significant media backlash, especially during his first three marriages.
Mildred Harris (1918): Chaplin married the 16-year-old actress when he was 29. The marriage was troubled from the start and ended in a bitter divorce just two years later.
Lita Grey (1924): At age 35, Chaplin married his 16-year-old leading lady to avoid legal trouble after she became pregnant. They had two sons, but the marriage ended in 1927 with a highly publicized, scandalous divorce court battle that tarnished Chaplin's reputation.
Paulette Goddard (1936): Chaplin married the co-star of his masterpieces Modern Times and The Great Dictator. Though the exact legal status of their marriage was always shrouded in secrecy, they lived together for years. They had an amicable separation in 1942 and remained on good terms.
Oona O'Neill (1943): At age 54, Chaplin finally found lasting happiness when he married 18-year-old Oona O'Neill, daughter of the famous playwright Eugene O'Neill. Exile from the United States
During the 1940s and early 1950s (the era of the "Red Scare" in America), Chaplin’s political views and personal scandals made him a prime target for the FBI and conservative politicians. He was accused of having communist sympathies.
In 1952, while Chaplin was traveling to London for the premiere of his film Limelight, the U.S. government revoked his re-entry permit. Effectively exiled, Chaplin refused to fight the decision and moved his family to Switzerland, where he bought a beautiful estate called Manoir de Ban in Corsier-sur-Vevey.
He only returned to the United States once, twenty years later in 1972, to accept an Honorary Academy Award. The Hollywood audience gave him a historic, record-breaking 12-minute standing ovation.
Children and Legacy
Chaplin was the father of 11 children in total. His final marriage to Oona brought him the large, warm family life he had lacked during his own impoverished childhood in London. Several of his children and grandchildren went on to become actors, most notably his daughter Geraldine Chaplin, who achieved international acclaim.
Chaplin passed away peacefully in his sleep on Christmas Day in 1977 at his home in Switzerland, surrounded by his family.
