De Cinema verwent dagelijks filmliefhebbers met een uitgebreid programma. De Cinema is een samenwerking tussen M HKA en De Studio.

De Cinema bevindt zich in de Maarschalk Gérardstraat 4, 2000 Antwerpen, centraal aan het Mechelseplein. Je kan ons bereiken met tram 4, 7, 12 en 24 of bus 1, 13, 22, 290 en 500. De dichtstbijzijnde Velo fietsstations zijn 084-Elzenveld en 073-Maarschalk Gérard.

On October 4th, De Cinema is opening its programme for a full day of audience favourites once again! Let us know which films you are dying to finally see on the big screen.

The three most popular titles will be screened on the occasion of Open Cinema, in collaboration with Flanders Audiovisual Fund (VAF).

Xander De Rycke komt naar De Cinema en neemt mee... zijn grote liefde voor Jackie Chan en diens grondlegende martial arts-films.

Omdat er weinig beter is dan samen kijken hoe Jackie zichzelf kapot maakt voor ons entertainment, koos Xander voor de actieklassieker POLICE STORY (1985) die de sterrencarrière van Jackie Chan definitief lanceerde.

In deze film speelt Chan een politieagent die een drugsnetwerk moet oprollen, maar hierdoor diep in de problemen komt. Fysieke comedy, legendarische stunts en een roekeloze actieheld: het zit allemaal in deze iconische jaren 1980-film!

Voor de film doet Xander zijn liefde voor Jackie Chan nog uit de doeken!

“Taipei Story is how I felt about the city at the time; its past, its present and its future.” – Edward Yang

In a Taipei that is growing faster than its residents can keep up with, Ah-chen and Ah-lung are losing their grip on each other. She is an ambitious real estate executive with her sights set on the West; he is a former baseball player stuck in his family’s ailing textile business. As the world around them races forward at breakneck speed, their relationship slowly grinds to a halt.

Director Edward Yang sketches the alienation in the concrete jungle with the precision of an architect. Just like Antonioni’s characters, Ah-chen and Ah-lung are swallowed up by their surroundings: the gray high-rises and the monotony of modern life leave no room for nostalgia or dreams. Here, Taipei is a labyrinth in which every attempt to escape only pushes them deeper into a melancholic isolation.

In LOUDER THAN YOU THINK, we embark on a cinematic journey through the turbulent life of Gary Young, drummer for Pavement and the band’s guardian of irreverence. Young’s antics, fueled by alcohol and drugs, were both the driving force behind the band’s rise and the cause of its eventual downfall. The film shows how his haphazard production methods inadvertently helped define an entire generation, while he himself constantly teetered on the fine line between pure self-expression and total self-destruction.

Thirty years later, a scarred Gary Young looks back on the trail of joy and destruction he left behind. Confronted with the physical toll of his lifestyle, he tells his story with the idiosyncratic honesty that always defined him. This documentary is an ode to the brilliant chaos of an outsider who simply refused to play by the rules. Discover the man who always lived just a little louder than the rest.

Zet je schrap voor een nieuwe Script Club. Dit keer neemt scenarist Angelo Tijssens (GIRL, CLOSE) je mee naar de essentie van cinema. Zijn keuze? ELEPHANT van Gus Van Sant. Een film die de wetten van het scenarioschrijven herschreef en de Gouden Palm won door de kijker niet zomaar een antwoord te geven, maar een mokerslag uit te delen.

Vergeet de geromantiseerde highschoolfilms die je kent. ELEPHANT kruipt onder de huid van een gewone schooldag die uitmondt in een onbevattelijk drama. Van Sant gooit alle regels overboord: geen klassieke opbouw, maar een revolutionaire structuur die je dwingt om het raadsel van de school shooter in de ogen te kijken. Pakkend, rauw en verontrustend geniaal.

We vertonen de film 17 juni eenmalig op een 35mm-print van CINEMATEK. Daarna duiken we de diepte in met een live podcast waarin Angelo en Anne Vanoppen het scenario tot op het bot fileren.

With the film program Slackers & Drifters, we’re reclaiming your full attention. No algorithms on the small screen dictating what you see, but real people who have carefully selected films specifically for the big screen. No images screaming for your attention, but films that slow down, allow for silence, and leave room to daydream, catch your breath, or dare to look the maddening void straight in the eye.

From getting lost in OLD JOY and THE PASSENGER to slowing down in IKIRU and getting bored in SLACKER, we demand our attention back in every way.

🎵An elderly Buster Keaton comes back to life in Nobel Prize winner Samuel Beckett’s lone work for cinema, archetypally called FILM. The peculiar short film concludes our annual collaboration programme with the Koninklijk Conservatorium Antwerpen.

Every year, the Conservatory joins forces with De Cinema to offer the musicians of the future a stage where they can develop their talents outside the lines of the classical constellations. In a space where music and film come together, just like they did for the first time more than a century ago at the genesis of cinema.

This edition focuses on SIGHT & SOUND: SHORT FILMS WITH LIVE MUSIC, a selection of short films that center around seeing and experiencing. Due to the efforts of the musicians, the element of ‘listening’ is added to the mix, with the new soundtracks they’ve composed for the film, which they bring for us live.

Join Cinea and De Cinema in early July for ZOMERFILMCOLLEGE 2026: a week of in-depth lectures by internationally renowned critics and academics, Q&As with filmmakers, and screenings of both original 35mm copies and recent digital restorations!

This 31st (!) edition features two diverse programme strands. HEARTS OF THE WORLD: GLOBAL FLOWS OF MELODRAMA, presented in collaboration with the UAntwerpen, and demonstrates how melodrama’s versatility allowed it to travel the world. With lectures by Professor Ben Singer (University of Wisconsin, Madison) and Dr. Viola Shafik (freelance filmmaker/lecturer/researcher).

In CINEMA OF POETRY: TEXTURE AND MOOD IN NARRATIVE FILM, we look for the elusive qualities—mystery, mood, texture, sensuality, etc.—that constitute ‘the poetic’ in narrative film. Guest speakers include ZFC habitués and film critics Adrian Martin and Cristina Álvarez López.

⤷ PASSES ARE NOW ON SALE via cinea.be! You can attend both programmes or either sub-programme. Tickets for separate lectures and screenings will become available at a later date. Film students and unemployed people can book their tickets at the reduced rate.
