Imagine Colignon

« Imagine Colignon » est une initiative citoyenne visant à promouvoir la réappropriation progressive de la place Colignon au profit des Schaerbeekois(e)s. La place Colignon, cœur et patrimoine historique de Schaerbeek, haut lieu symbolique qui accueille la maison communale, est depuis des années utilisée exclusivement comme un immense parking à ciel ouvert, empêchant toute autre activité, toute fo

rme de convivialité et de partage de l’espace public. Le centre de Schaerbeek est densément bâti et peuplé. Les espaces de rencontre, de délassement et de repos y sont rares. La place Colignon est spacieuse et bénéficie d’une excellente orientation propice à l’organisation de nombreuses activités récréatives, culturelles ou commerciales. Une nouvelle ligne de métro est programmée à Schaerbeek d’ici 10 à 15 ans. A cette occasion, la commune envisage de créer une vraie place publique. Mais 15 ans, c’est long ! Beaucoup trop long ! Il est possible, dès à présent et à peu de frais, d’initier un processus doux de réappropriation progressive de la place Colignon. Libérer ponctuellement la place du stationnement ne coûte rien. Pas besoin non plus de grands travaux d’infrastructure ni de moyens démesurés pour tester de nouveaux usages, des activités ponctuelles ou périodiques et de nouvelles formes de convivialité : espace de rencontre, jeux, marché, terrasses, cinéma en plein air,… etc.

« Imagine Colignon » souhaite que la commune réalise, avec les habitants et les acteurs du quartier, un calendrier d’évènements et des aménagements ponctuels, temporaires et légers mais de grande qualité sur la place communale. Objectifs : répondre au besoin pressant d’espace public, renforcer la cohésion sociale et enrichir la vision souhaitée pour l’aménagement futur de cette place. Des initiatives similaires sont menées avec succès à Gand (Leefstraat), Paris (Paris Respire), San Francisco (Pavement to Parks) ou encore New-York (NYC Plaza Progam). A Bruxelles, de tels projets sont encore trop rares et ne sont pas suffisamment soutenus par les pouvoir publics. Imagine Colignon est porté par un collectif d’une dizaine d’habitants et acteurs de la vie locale désireux d’ouvrir le débat de manière constructive sur l’usage de l’espace public, sa réappropriation et son aménagement futur. Imagine Colignon joue un rôle de lobby citoyen, organise des réunions de quartier et des événements visant un meilleur partage de l’espace public et une plus grande convivialité dans le centre de Schaerbeek. « Imagine Colignon » is een burgerinitiatief om de toeëigening van het Coligonplein te promoten door de Schaerbeekse bevolking. Het Colignonplein, het hart en historisch erfgoed van Schaarbeek waar het gemeentehuis gelegen is, wordt al jarenlang gebruikt als een grote parkeerplaats waardoor het onmogelijk is om de openbare ruimte op een aangename manier te gebruiken. Deze situatie is des te meer schokkend omdat het centrum van Schaarbeek dichtbevolkte en dicht bebouwd is. De ontmoetingsplaatsen voor ontspanning en rust zijn zeldzaam. Het Colignonplein is ruim en heeft een uitstekende oriëntatie met een potentieel voor de organisatie van een groot aantal recreatieve, culturele of commerciële activiteiten. Een nieuwe metrolijn wordt gepland in Schaarbeek binnen 10 tot 15 jaar. Een halte is gepland op het Colignonplein. Er wordt tot dat ogenblik gewacht om het openbare plein aan te leggen. Maar 15 jaar is een lange tijd! Het is vanaf nu mogelijk en met weinig kosten het proces in te zetten van een progressieve toe-eigening van het Colignonplein. Het punctueel parkingvrij maken kost niets. Het is niet nodig om grote infrastructuurwerken te doen, ook geen grote middelen nodig om nieuwe ingebruikname te testen, activiteiten of nieuwe vormen van samenleven: ontmoetingsplaats, spel, markt, terras, openluchtcinema, … enz. Laten we aan de gemeente vragen om na te denken met de bewoners om een agenda van events en/of tijdelijke en kwalitatieve inrichtingen te voorzien op het Colignonplein op basis van een beperkt ontwerp zonder alles onieuw aan te leggen. Doelstelling: snel de openbare ruimte transformeren en nieuwe toepassingen en vormen van aangenaam gebruik voor te bereiden. Dergelijke initiatieven zijn al met succes in Parijs (« Paris ademt »), San Francisco « Pavement to Park ») en New York ( « New York Plaza Progam ») uitgevoerd: een ruimte wordt omgetoverd tot openlucht bioscoop, een parkeerterrein wordt aangelegd als terras of speelplein, een hoekperceel wordt ongevormd tot een moestuin…

In Brussel, zijn deze initiatieven nog steeds te weinig gekend ( « Walking Madou”, Dillensplein) en worden ze niet voldoende ondersteund door de openbare overheden. Imagine Colignon bestaat uit een collectief van een tiental inwoners en actoren van het lokale leven die wensen het debat te openen op een constructieve manier over het gebruik van de publieke ruimte, het toe-eigenen van de ruimte en zijn toekomstige inrichting. Imagine Colignon speelt een rol van burgerlijke lobby, organiseert vergaderingen in de wijk en evenementen die een betere indeling van de publieke ruimte en een grotere gezelligheid in het centrum van Schaarbeek wil bereiken. Like, delen, verspreiden!


« Imagine Colignon » is a citizens’ initiative whose aim is to progressively give back Colignon Square to the people of Schaerbeek. For many years, Colignon Square, highly symbolic location where Schaerbeek City Hall is located, has been used exclusively as an open parking lot, preventing all other activities, social interaction or sharing of the public space. This is particularly striking, as you know that Schaerbeek city centre is densely built and densely populated and that meeting spaces en rest areas are scarce. Colignon Square is a large and sunny square, suitable for the organisation of many recreational, cultural or commercial activities (play spaces, market place, vegetable garden, terraces, temporary cinema, etc.). A new underground metro line is planned to be built and pass under Schaerbeek in 10 or 15 years. A metro station will be located on Colignon Square. The municipality will then consider redeveloping Colignon Square into a real public square. But 15 years is a long wait! Way too long! So, why don’t we use the new urban renewal program which starts now in the « Pogge » neighbourhood («Pogge sustainable Neighbourhood Contract») to fulfil the urgent need of public space? Why not take this opportunity to test various temporary or regular activities and enrich our vision of how the square could be redeveloped in the future? Let’s ask the municipality of Schaerbeek to develop, with its inhabitants, an events calendar and/or a slight but high-quality redevelopment of Colignon Square. Goal: a quick upgrading of Colignon Square to test new uses and social interactions. Such temporary public spaces have been developed sucessfully in Paris (Paris Respire), San Francisco (Pavement to Parks) and New-York (NYC Plaza Progam): a public space turned into a temporary open air cinema, a parking lot into a terrace or a play space, a street’s corner lot into a vegetable garden…

In Brussels, such temporary projects are not developed as often as they should be (for instance Walking Madou or Dillens Square) and are not supported enough by public authorities. Now is the time to build the future! The municipality of Schaerbeek is now preparing the programme of the new sustainable neighbourghood contract Pogge. Now is the time to speak out and support « Imagine Colignon ». Like this page, share it and spread it!
