Tonight!
In our ciné-concert partnership with Roving Picture Shows, we present the silent film science fiction masterpiece “Metropolis” – with a live improvised score by Chris Coupland of Trio from Mars.
Set in a futuristic city split between wealthy elites above ground and oppressed workers below. The son of the city’s ruler discovers the workers’ suffering after meeting a woman who calls for unity. Meanwhile, a scientist creates a robot that incites chaos and rebellion. One of the most celebrated movies in cinema history...For the first time, Lang’s vision... which has influenced contemporary films like “Blade Runner” and “Star Wars,” seems complete. — The New York Times
For this ciné-concert, keyboardist Chris Coupland from award-winning Trio from Mars will improvise a live score, on his Wurlitzer and other keyboards, but also on City Cinema acoustic piano, beautifully restored recently by Max Keenlyside. Many thanks to William Alexander for the poster.
Incorporating more than 25 minutes of newly discovered footage, this 2010 restoration of METROPOLIS is the definitive edition of Fritz Lang’s science fiction masterpiece. The film’s dazzling visual design and special effects are more striking than ever. And the integration of scenes and subplots long considered lost endows METROPOLIS with even greater tension and emotional resonance, as it dramatizes the conflict between wealthy über-capitalists and rebellious subterranean laborers—orchestrated by a diabolical scientist capable of destroying them all.
