13 miles of water, centuries of connections. Get a whole different story at the Discover Ulster-Scots Centre, in Belfast’s Cathedral Quarter. A spacious exhibition gallery, open Monday to Friday from 10am-4pm, it’s packed with stories that you’ll not be able to find in most other museums. And entry is free of charge! Even though Ulster and Scotland are just 13 miles apart, the story of the close c

onnections can be hard to find in most museums. Here at the Discover Ulster-Scots Centre you can discover thousands of years of history, from the formation of the Giant’s Causeway (which links County Antrim with the Western Isles of Scotland) right up to the present day.

• the exhibition panels cover ten major stories, starting with the arrival of Edward Bruce in 1315
• the timeline room shows how events in Ulster link with Scotland and the rest of the world
• the language and literature area gives examples of Ulster-Scots publishing, as well as words most people use every day
• a large journey planner map highlights other Ulster-Scots places to visit
• audio-visual terminals allow you to watch films and search databases
• display cases feature rare artefacts and publications
• free literature available, much of which isn’t available elsewhere
• gift shop offering books, CDs and tartanwares

The Centre is located within the historic Belfast Corn Exchange building which dates from 1852. In 1859 the Corn Exchange hosted a major Robert Burns centenary event which was attended by Burns’ descendants who lived in the city. The Discover Ulster-Scots Centre also hosts a range of events during the year, so keep an eye on our events programme to see what’s on next. So why not drop in next time you’re in Cathedral Quarter? This day next week, our team will be in full flow at Day One of the National Ploughing , sharing about all things Ulster-Scots as they bring our culture, history and language to the masses 🚜🙂

Moreover, they’ll be joined throughout the course of the event by three top class bands from the Ulster-Scots community, who will showcase our beloved Accordion, Pipes and Drums, and Highland Dance traditions:

On Tuesday 15th September, Sister Susan Graham Memorial Accordion band will be performing from 1.45pm - 2.45pm 🪗

On Wednesday 16th September, Graham Memorial Clontibret Pipe Band will be performing from 2.15pm - 3.15pm 🥁

On Thursday 17th September, Moyne Pipe Band (Cully Hall Committee) and Moyne Highland Dancers will be performing from 1.45pm - 2.45pm 🎵💃

All the performances will take place in Hub 2 (Stand 139, Row 7, Block 4), where our team will be based throughout. It’s the place to be, so if you’re at ‘the Ploughing’, make sure you call by for a blether and a bit o crack! 💬👍🏻

Another excellent Ulster-Scots contribution at this year’s came in the form of Desertmartin Accordion Band and Aughafatten Coronation Accordion Band combining as one to showcase our wonderful accordion marching band tradition 🪗👏🏻🙂

There is something very special about the accordion that, for many people, just warms the heart and conjures happy memories all over Ulster 💙
