The Palace Cinema Broadstairs

The Palace Cinema Broadstairs An independent cinema in Broadstairs for people who love independent film.

60 Years a Cinema 1965-2025 🎈

The Palace is small, welcoming, independent and family-run, offering a programme of quality mainstream, independent and world cinema for locals and visitors alike! It's usually open 7 days a week, offering at least two choices of film plus special events including 'Palace Sunday Silents', monthly silent films with live piano accompaniment Sept-June. The cinema is deceptively small from the street-

front; inside at street level there is a little foyer (with a lovely range of snacks and drinks, and fully licensed) and balcony. Stairs from the foyer lead down to the stalls, and we have step-free access at the rear of the building. The Palace is housed in a lovely Grade II listed building. Originally a shipwrights stood on the site until in the 1910s it was transformed into the more elegant, and solid, 'York Gate Hall' to house the armour collection of Sir Guy Laking, whose family holidayed next door in York Gate House. From the late 1910s-1960s the hall was hired out in the season for puppet shows and 16mm cartoon shows before being converted into a cinema by local cinema entrepreneur Jack Field, who originally named it the 'Windsor'. It was re-named the Palace in 2006 by the third owners, Colin Jay and Sean Mills, who undertook a large scale renovation and installation of larger screen plus digital sound & projection.

Open days / Free talks!

If you’ve never been in before, annual open days at the Palace are a chance to just drop in for a quick look around, or stay a bit longer to read our cinema history exhibition boards, or join us for a free illustrated talk exploring the Palace and the jobs at this cinema and around Thanet, 1950s to today!

Times have changed a bit since the projectionst had two assistants, the whole staff lined up for checks before opening and ice creams were from the usherette tray.

Do you know anyone who used to work in a local cinema 1950s-2000s and remembers any stories from those days? Whether they were manageress or rewind boy, cleaner or cashier, we’d love to hear from them and add their memories to those we’ve collected - please email us at [email protected]. Thank you!

HERITAGE OPEN DAYS at the Palace Cinema
Fri 18, Sat 19 Sept 11am-2pm
Free talk each day at 1pm
No booking req’d.

The Great Palace Colouring comp!

Thanks to everyone who’s come along to see one of our family films in the summer hols, and to everyone who took a colouring sheet and brought it back to us coloured in.

So much work went into each one and we loved adding them to the walls in the foyer for us and everyone else to enjoy!

Each colouring sheet was in with a chance to win a real cinema poster for the film. We are now happy to announce the winners, 2-4 depending on how many posters we had to give away:

TOY STORY 5 - Jack (5) and Sophia (9)

MINIONS & MONSTERS - Delilah (5), Zack (7), siblings Freddie (9) & Heath (11) and siblings Alfie (4) & Oliver (7)

MOANA - Grace (7) and Ariana (8)

Congratulations to all! Thanks again to everyone who entered the competitions, and we look forward to seeing you again soon at the Palace for more family films in October half term 😊
