David Lean Cinema

David Lean Cinema The David Lean Cinema, Croydon Clocktower This is a non-political campaign for all who want to see the David Lean Cinema open.

From March 1995 to April 2011, it offered the best of British and World cinema, as well as classic re-releases and recent favourites. It was closed as part of major arts-related cuts by Croydon Council. From December 2011 to January 2014, the Campaign screened around 70 films in the Spread Eagle and other Croydon venues, which enabled us to build up our support base and mailing list. Eventually, w

e were invited by the Council to start presenting films in the David Lean Cinema. We began on 27 March 2014 and we now present around 12 films a month, staffed by our volunteer team of over 70. Early in 2015, we became a Community Interest Company. Our long-term goal remains to see the David Lean operating as fully-functioning cinema with screenings on at least six days a week.

This is VOLUNTEERS' WEEK, when we celebrate the exceptional part played by over 90 volunteers in keeping our community cinema open. Volunteers are responsible for every task undertaken at screenings (and certain others behind the scenes), and we're immensely grateful for their skills, dedication and enthusiasm. They are a huge part of what makes the DLC "no ordinary cinema"!

Last Thursday evening, we marked the final shift of volunteer steward Roland Rosser, who has served ever since we reopened the cinema in 2014. He's 93, which shows we don't have an age limit! His earliest memory of seeing a film is 'Sun Valley Serenade' (1941). It has been a privilege having Roland in the team, and we look forward to seeing him in future audiences.
