In a garden in the sleepy suburbs of Edinburgh, sits an oasis of calm for one busy family. Their Box Office provides them with a flexible work space, complete with fold-away desk which simply disappears when not needed. Hooked up with superfast internet and Wi-Fi enabled smart heating, it is more than up to the task of modern living.
And at the end of the day, when the work is done, the space transforms to become a cosy lounge – an entertainment hub for binging box-sets, streaming some favourite albums, or simply reading a book.
We wanted to create something modern and sharp looking for this family, but with a warmth and cosiness to relax in. Big windows and bi-fold doors create plenty of light to contrast the bold, black floor and decorative details. The doorway is angled to face the house – creating a visual and architectural link between the house and the garden.
As the kids get older, no doubt this will become their favoured hang-out space. Or maybe mum and dad will simply choose it for some peace and quiet!

Nestling under majestic pines in a Linlithgow garden, is an office to truly banish the Monday morning blues…

Dwayne and Lynne Pascal told us they wanted a workspace in which they could appreciate their garden.

We were inspired by the beautiful tall pines and created a room designed to accentuate the lovely setting.

Tall windows and vertical slats mirror the natural lines of the trees, while the vertical cladding inside draws the eye to the end of the room, adding texture and echoing the exterior aesthetics. On the practical side, USB sockets in the walls and Ethernet cabling mean Dwayne’s work in IT is fully supported.

The placement of the windows ensures the space captures the sun in the morning and as it moves around, ensuring plentiful natural light throughout the day.

Will says, “Key to this design was bringing a sense of the outside into the space with natural wood textures, ensuring it worked within its landscape, both aesthetically and practically.”

An Edinburgh Escape

The need for extra space and the opportunity to enhance a previously uninspiring garden, saw us draw up plans for this Box Office. The family all had different requirements for ‘their’ space. They were keen for a place to work away from the house. The boys wanted their very own cinema. And there was a requirement for an extra bed for weekend guests. We had our work cut out. Especially as there was a footprint of just 2.4 metres square to work within.

A seemingly empty space houses not only a workstation with a screen and desk, but a double bed complete with mattress. When not in use, these are hidden behind smooth walls, ready for the showing of a family movie, courtesy of the ceiling mounted projector.

Angled towards the house, the Box Office became the focal point in the garden, informing the rest of the garden design. A new path, landscaping, and the painting of the garage wall tied everything together. The installation of bi fold doors in the Box Office, which open up completely, allows the family to appreciate their newly enhanced garden on warmer days.

This Box Office was created for Gemma and her young family…

The need for extra space and the opportunity to enhance a previously uninspiring garden, saw plans drawn up for this Box Office. Each member of the
family had different requirements for ‘their’ space. Gemma was keen for a place to work away from the house. The boys wanted their very own cinema. And there was a requirement for an extra bed for weekend guests. It was not going to be easy. Especially as there was a plot of just 9 square metres to work within.
It did, however, give Box Office the opportunity to test out a few design ideas.
The decision to install bi fold doors in the Box Office, which open up completely, allows the family to appreciate their newly enhanced garden on warmer days.
