Hardcastle: Space Case

“I have really fallen in love with the BLACKWING7 lineup. The versatility of the different tunings paired with a beautiful resolution has quickly made them some of my go-to lens sets. The T-Tuned has such soft, creamy falloff and controlled flares, but for 'Space Case' we wanted a more extreme look. We quickly zeroed in on the X-Tuned set. They resolved beautifully with a perfect amount of falloff, but the hallmark was the flares. Wide open, they give beautiful peacock flares with tons of nostalgic 90’s music video vibes. I was able to control the effect by closing down ½ to 1 stop, which allowed us to give each different vignette within the video a differentiating look, not only with the lighting and locations but also the lens characteristics within the same set.” - Connor Van Bodell

"After a lot of discussions between Brendan and I, we decided to go for a naturalistic look. The story, the city, and the cast were all full of character so we decided to mirror that with characterful lenses and BLACWKING7s by TRIBE7 gave us that in abundance. Every individual in the film we treated as portraiture. We enhanced that again with our 3:2 aspect ratio and single-source lighting. We used no outdoor lighting, bounce boards, fills, or negative fills we just chose to shoot at the right time of the day when the sun was where we wanted it to be. North Cork City is such a cinematic place so everywhere we pointed the camera gave us something new and cinematic." - Colm Hogan

Balcones Distillery DC: Whisky From a New Perspective

“The X-Tuned variant of the BLACKWING7 lenses provided us with many opportunities to be surprised by their performance. Their reaction to light is seemingly never the same due to their incredible sensitivity. Their proneness to flare and aberrations gave us something to both work with and against in some of the darker environments. The swirl and soap bubble nature of the bokeh, especially on the 57mm and 77mm, created a wonderful palette for the close-up details and portraiture we were focusing on." - Corey C. Waters

“Jacques Audiard and I liked how the TRIBE7 BLACKWING T-Tuned lenses have good rectilinear imaging, with subtle halation, and how they bring a sense of style to the image, but without too much sharpness. They give an appealing kind of gloss to the image, but have a softness that helps the rendering of texture, especially skin, whilst also countering the extreme precision of the Sony Venice 2 sensor.

The 37mm and 57mm BLACKWING7 T-Tuned lenses became our main focal lengths for medium and close-up shots. I also had a 57mm X-Tuned lens, which is much more sensitive to flares than the T-Tuned optics, when we felt the image needed to be elevated or more expressive.” - Paul Guilhaume

“I was looking for photographic resources that valued black skin for a series I was doing about the Brazilian carnival, where the majority of the cast is made up of black people. For me, it was important to prioritize shine, and enhance black skin in the camera and in the final result. I was passionate about filming with BLACKWING7s for many reasons. For it's softness, for the colors that the lenses deliver and for the flaring. I can’t wait to film with BLACKWING7s again.'' - Henrique Sales
