SCIENTIFIC BOMBSHELL / DNA SPEAKS ALBANIAN:
We are the most genetically homogeneous people in Europe, with 3,000 years of continuity in the same lands – and DNA proves it.
A new international study published in Nature, using one of the most advanced modern genetic methods — IBD segments (Identical By Descent) — has produced what many consider the strongest scientific evidence yet regarding the origin of Albanians: we are the most genetically homogeneous population in Europe, with uninterrupted continuity in our homeland for over 3,000 years.
HOW THE STUDY WAS CONDUCTED
Scientists analyzed thousands of DNA samples from Albania, Kosovo, and the Albanian diaspora using databases from "23andMe" (https://www.23andme.com?utm_source=chatgpt.com) and "AncestryDNA" (https://www.ancestry.com/dna/?utm_source=chatgpt.com).
The IBD method searches the genome for “long identical segments” inherited from a common ancestor. The longer the segment, the closer the familial connection.
3 MAIN DISCOVERIES THAT SHOOK THE SCIENTIFIC COMMUNITY:
1. EUROPEAN RECORD FOR SHARED ANCESTRY
“By far the highest rates of IBD within any populations is found between Albanian speakers,” the study states. For the period 500–1500 years ago, any two Albanians share on average around 600 common ancestors. No other European population reaches this level. For comparison, third cousins share approximately 53 cM, while Albanians share hundreds of cM between one another.
2. 3,000 YEARS OF CONTINUITY — SINCE THE BRONZE AGE
The August 2025 study compared ancient DNA with modern Albanians. The result: “remarkable continuity of West Balkan Late Bronze and Iron Age ancestry in Albania.”
In simple terms: modern Albanians are direct descendants of the people who lived in these lands since around 1000 BCE. Early Medieval Albanians (800–900 CE) are genetically almost identical to Albanians today.
3. SLAVIC INFLUENCE: ONLY 10–20% AND RELATIVELY LATE
The IBD method can precisely measure admixture. Among Albanians, the influence from medieval Slavic migrations is estimated at only 10–20%, significantly lower than among Serbs, Bulgarians, or Greeks. Around 80–90% of the genome remains native West Balkan.
WHY THIS STUDY IS HISTORIC:
1. It brings an end to debates about origin.
IBD is considered a “mathematical proof” of ancestry. It is not based only on linguistic or archaeological theories — it is living DNA evidence.
2. It challenges three major myths:
- The “Caucasus origin” myth — IBD demonstrates 3,000 years of local roots.
- The “massive mixing” myth — extreme genetic homogeneity points to long isolation and endogamy over 1,500 years.
- The “young nation” myth — Albanians are among the oldest continuous genetic populations in Europe.
3. Importance for national identity
This is not nationalism. It is science. The findings suggest that Albanians preserved their genetic core despite Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman rule.
WHAT EXPERTS SAY:
“This is the genetic map of a nation. It reveals a small mountain population that remained relatively isolated and then expanded rapidly during the last thousand years with limited outside mixing. This explains why two random Albanians can genetically resemble fourth- or fifth-degree cousins,” says one of the authors.
REGIONAL CONTEXT:
While neighboring populations show more dispersed IBD patterns and higher admixture, Albanians appear as a distinct “genetic island” in the Balkans. Even the Arbëresh communities in Italy retain IBD links directly connected to Albania from 500 years ago.
