Dear Members,

The latest film in our current season takes place next Wednesday, March 12, in Iontas at 7.30 pm. Below, is our summary of the film:

"This season’s classic film is by the enormously influential Italian director, Michelangelo Antonioni. Unlike many of his films, "The Passenger" has something of a traditional plot, while still being concerned with familiar Antonioni themes such as alienation and lostness in the modern world. David Locke (played by Jack Nicholson) is a reporter gathering material in Africa for a documentary on a guerrilla movement. In typical Antonioni fashion, Locke is filmed as adrift in space, here the African desert, a metaphor for Locke’s own existential drift – he is frustrated with his life, his marriage is failing and he is losing interest in his job. Circumstances offer him the chance to abandon his identity and assume another. Although one may well disappear from one’s own life and from family and colleagues, can one escape from oneself, and from one’s past? And whose identity exactly has Locke taken on? Antonioni follows these themes through as Locke finds he has not gained a freedom he may have thought to achieve, culminating in one of the most brilliantly filmed end-scenes in modern cinema by a master of cinematic imagery."

We hope to see you next Wednesday!

Our next film - the last in the current season - is
The Teachers' Lounge (Das Lehrerzimmer), a 2023 German drama film directed by İlker Çatak.
It will be screened next Wednesday, December 11 in Iontas at 7.30 pm.

Summary:
"Things are being stolen in a German secondary school. In such an atmosphere, nerves are taut and prejudices are quick to be reawakened. Unacknowledged racism seems to be at work when a pupil is accused of being the thief, causing the boy’s idealistic teacher, convinced of his innocence, to take measures to discover the truth. So it is that things spin out of control. Inflamed emotions and hitherto unspoken resentments get mixed into the damaging atmosphere of accusation and counter-accusation, the inevitable consequence of which is that the mutual respect and restraints necessary for the harmonious functioning of this small community begin to unravel. 'The Teachers’ Lounge' is a forceful drama in which the cultural and personal conflicts in the school expose the tensions and vulnerability of wider contemporary society as it seeks to find a balance, establish truth and serve justice in increasingly strident times."

We look forward to seeing you next Wednesday!

Dear members,

After starting our Autumn-Winter season with Wim Wenders' highly acclaimed 'Perfect Days' (2024). our next film takes place on Wednesday, October 16 at 7.30 pm at Iontas Theatre .

The film we will present is Jonathan Glazer's 'The Zone of Interest', released earlier this year to both acclaim and controversy. Its subject is the difficult one of the Holocaust, but the focus is not on the victims - there are no scenes at all from within the Auschwitz concentration camp. Instead, the film examines the perpetrators; everything takes place in and around the attractive home and beautiful gardens of the camp commandant and his wife and children. The power of the film lies in this juxtaposition - the coexistence of idyllic home and death camp. The film is vital in its reminder of how a cultured nation like Germany, within the mainstream of Western, Christian and Enlightenment traditions, could end up producing the most evil regime in human history.

We look forward to seeing you there!

The final film in the current Blayney Film @ Iontas season, "Fallen Leaves", takes place on Wednesday week, May 22, and will allow us to discover the cinema of the renowned Finnish director, Aki Kaurismaki. No one makes films like Kaurismaki. We could tell you that it has romance in it and features scenes that tend to recur in Kaurismaki's films: men who drink too much, people on the margins of society who endure what the world inflicts on them, people singing (here, in a karaoke bar), and, in this film, a stray dog. Oh, and yes, comedy. But none of this would convey the deadpan pleasures of "Fallen Leaves", nor how Kaurismaki's frugal cinematic style transcends the bleakness of the world it portrays to create a delightful film in which love travels on its rocky road.

While walking in a park that day, she meets Antoine, a soldier at the end of his leave from the Algerian War. The possibilities this encounter brings change their respective sense of doom into hopefulness.

During the 1940s and 50s, Hollywood entered a “noir” period, producing riveting films based on hard-boiled fiction. These films were set in dark locations and shot in a black & white aesthetic that fit like a glove. Hardened men wore fedoras and forever smoked ci******es.
