“ This is one for the ages” – ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ The Irish Times

“With remarkable confidence, [Wells] just lets her movie unspool naturally, like a haunting and deceptively simple short story. – ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ The Guardian

11-year-old Sophie and her father Calum travel to a holiday resort in Turkey for a relaxing sunshine break. As they lounge by the pool and explore the tourist sights, they record their trip on a camcorder. Twenty years later, an adult Sophie looks back on the holiday and her relationship with her father-both the fond memories and the things that have been lost forever.

The extraordinary debut feature from Scottish writer/director Charlotte Wells is anachingly tender portrait of a father-daughter relationship. Driven by magnificent performances from young Frankie Corio and Ireland’s own Paul Mescal, Aftersun dives deep and unearths the unspoken emotional truths that exceedingly few films manage to capture.

GILE: A moving short documentary directed by Éania McGarry on the origins of The Annual Lough Gill Hospice Swim in Sligo will be screened at 6:30pm on Saturday in The Glens Centre!

Inspired by a conversation Paul Mc Garry had with his nephew Neill and the care Neill received under North West Hospice Sligo in 2009, Paul was prompted to organise an event to raise much-needed funds for the Hospice. This saw the beginning of the Lough Gill Hospice Swim. Since then, this event has seen hundreds of swimmers (many taking part on multiple occasions), commence the swim at Parkes Castle, Fivemilebourne, Co Leitrim and embark on the long, intense 10k endurance to the finish line at Doorly Park, Sligo.

Since its inception in 2009, the globally renowned Lough Gill Hospice Swim has raised in the region of €400,000 for the Northwest Hospice. This absorbing documentary captures the origins of the swim which centres around Neill McGarry’s journey with cancer and his untimely death, ‘one day before his 30th birthday’. The documentary has a particular focus on the unique, 2021-night swim called ‘Follow your Last Star’, named after a song penned by Neill himself. This event was aimed at sustaining momentum for the swim and vital fundraising for the Northwest Hospice during the pandemic.

Despite multiple media campaigns throughout the 13 years giving people a glimpse of the essence of this event, none have given viewers the true essence of the swim. GILE unveils the power of the human narrative. The camera bears witness to Paul’s raw grief, emotional pain and resilience. The delicate moments which capture Paul’s words, facial expression, eye movement and tone of voice make this documentary natural, effortless and profoundly moving.

GILE is a tribute to Neill McGarry and emanates profound grief, love, loss, family, memories, and life challenges but above all resilience and hope!

Kim Bartley is the director of Pure Grit which will be screened this Friday at 8pm in The Glens Centre! Read what she has to say about her work and what inspires her!

‘I like to make thought provoking, memorable documentaries. My focus is on developing open and trusting relationships with those I film and finding ways to translate their emotions and their stories into compelling, creative films with grit and heart.

I grew up in Paris but I’m now based in Ireland where I run Frontline Films a small but busy documentary production company.

I shot my first report in 1998 while on assignment in Kosovo. I loved the urgency and sense of being on the frontline of stories that matter so I began working as a photographer & videographer with NGO emergency response teams- documenting their field work in conflict and crises across the globe before returning to filmmaking as a freelance producer and director.

In 2003 “The Revolution Will Not Be Televised” a documentary I co-directed and shot, chronicling the failed coup against Venezuelan President Chavez from inside the presidential palace, premiered at SXSW, scooped up dozens of awards and continues to be used in media courses across the world.

I have won multiple international awards including the Grierson and IDA awards for Best Feature Doc & Banff’s Global Television Grand Prize. In Ireland I have twice won Best Documentary Feature at the Galway Film Fleadh and have been nominated for six IFTA awards for Best Documentary.

In 2021 I was selected for a screenwriting grant through X-Pollinator an Irish cross-disciplinary professional development initiative for female talent. My treatment has since been picked up for development and I am currently writing LEMONADE, my first work of fiction which I plan to direct.’
