Business to the Buddha

Business to the Buddha Every thought from earthly to unearthly The following is my first blog - Why this title? There were many lessons of Buddhism in the book.

I tried answering in that blog why I selected this title for blogging...

I was reading a book – old path white clouds, walking in the footsteps of Buddha – by Thich Nhat Hanh. One which stuck to me very profoundly was – interdependent co-arising. My interpretation of the concept in layman’s terms is – we all grow when we help each other to grow whether it is our subordinates or our competitors.

“When Ferrari and Honda run on the racing track competing for the first spot, they are not eying at the first spot, they are racing to offer best product to their customers.” The Buddha’s teaching on ‘Dependent co-arising’ teaches me this. “Each one of us is a rung of a ladder to the other and vice versa, hence for self development and moving higher up, one’s ladder should be strong enough, even one’s competitors.” I believe this will be the extension of P&G’s present approach of Connect & Develop in future; working on various fronts with the competitors such as IPR – strategically innovating – besides others. What I feel is as we evolve as humans further, such philosophical concepts will come in our main stream without our conscious knowledge. We studied a case in our marketing course recently, launch of Z3 (BMW car) with the New James Bond movie Golden Eye. This was again a case of interdependent co-arising. How many knew about this? Effectively, the title of business to Buddha looked apt to me. The other reason for the same was – these two seemingly different concepts encompass almost everything on which I would possibly write on the blogs. Therefore, I selected the title with its caption – Everything from earthly and unearthly. The blog would be my thoughts from physical to metaphysical all. I trust I will be able to keep pace with life and still take time to write some or the other things on the blog.

I turned 45 recently! But my health report shows that it looks like the report is of someone in his 30s. I’m not a gym freak. In fact it is evident that I do not have bulky muscle! I’m just like any professional who is fairly at senior position - juggling work, deadlines, targets, city traffic, finding difficult to get time for self or family and any other sort of stress....

In 2010 when I started the blog Business to Buddha, my hypothesis was simple - there is a connection between business, economics, management and spirituality. At that time, I found it very logical. But today, I sometimes stop and ask myself - does it still stand true? Or was it only a nice thought to start a blog? I go back to Buddha’s teaching of dependent co-arising - we grow when others grow....

Occasionally, I am sharing stories from Indian culture with my daughter - Adviti. Though, we've not watched the recently released movie Mahavatar Narsimha, but I have read the story of Bhakt Prahalad in the form of Amar Chitra Katha for her. I wish I get more time with her to explore, once she grows up, it would be the other way round, probably she would not have time for me....

Mind’s chatter rarely stops. On that fateful day more than a year ago, even though I was riding my two-wheeler, mind was rambling, 9:05 am I will reach home. We will have breakfast, by 10:00 am or so we will take a stroll in the society. By that time Adviti will be back from her dance class. We would get ready by 11:00 am spend some time at home and start for social gathering followed by lunch....

"When you get to the end of your rope, tie a knot and hang on". This was one of my MBA batchmate's status message. I am talking about 2010-11. I asked her, what is the meaning? Why have you put it? She explained it to me, the context was our tiring coursework and demanding content. At times it was difficult to even comprehend and we needed extra-classes....

The past few months have been intensely demanding. Even when I wanted to write or reflect, I simply didn’t have the time. Ironically, the only quiet moments came while taking a bath—and during those moments, I often wished for a wireless connection to my brain, just to download my thoughts directly. This constant “busy-ness” wasn’t just professional; it touched every part of my life - personal, familial, and work-related....

I had the privilege of visiting several temples in Tamil Nadu last month, including the iconic Rameshwaram, one of the Char-Dhams for Hindus. It was an eye-opening experience that stirred memories of my younger days in Dhar, Madhya Pradesh, where I visited temples more frequently. Over time, however, my visits had become less frequent. The reasons were a plenty. Two that I feel important to discuss include first there is “no conversation” and second mostly I provide my “wish list” to the deity and leave....

Recently, I had an intriguing conversation with my friend Vikas on our society’s basketball court. Vikas is an excellent practitioner of Yoga, and he does his practices often around the court. Though we had never discussed spirituality or meditation before but this time we discussed not only work, books but also the Indian spiritual masters. After exchanging New Year pleasantries, we found ourselves talking about the impact of AI on our lives and businesses....

Many a times, one thought triggers another and one goes on a long trip sitting at one place. My travel recently had been the same. The collarbone fracture that is still healing has taken me on many trips, here is one where I ended up questioning myself - is it self respect or ego? Our return train journey from my sister's home was turning into an unexpected adventure....

How often you delete a random post on social media because someone asked you to do it? I did it twice, once when my sister told me and once when Ramanna uncle ji told me. Ramanna uncleji was my adopted uncle. This is a tribute to him. He passed away in April. I blog occasionally these days, so I am late....
