WHO AM I? (Part 2)
The more I ask this question, the more I realize that many of us spend our lives introducing ourselves without ever truly knowing ourselves.
We know our names.
We know our birthdays.
We know where we come from.
We know what people expect from us.
But knowing facts about yourself is not the same as knowing yourself.
Sometimes I wonder how many people are living lives they never chose.
How many dreams were inherited?
How many fears were borrowed?
How many beliefs were accepted simply because everyone else accepted them?
A child enters this world with wonder.
Then life begins speaking.
Parents speak.
Friends speak.
Society speaks.
Success speaks.
Failure speaks.
Before long, a person can become covered with so many labels that they can no longer distinguish their own voice from the voices around them.
And so a question begins to rise:
If I removed every title...
Every achievement...
Every disappointment...
Every expectation placed upon me...
Who would remain?
Would I recognize that person?
Or have I spent so much time becoming who the world wanted me to be that I no longer know who I am?
Perhaps that is why solitude is uncomfortable for many people.
Because silence has a way of introducing us to ourselves.
When the noise fades...
When the distractions disappear...
When there is nobody to impress and nobody to perform for...
A man finally meets the person he has been carrying all along.
Himself.
And not everyone likes what they find.
Some discover wounds they never healed.
Some discover fears they never confronted.
Some discover dreams they abandoned years ago.
Yet I am beginning to believe that self-discovery is not about creating a new person.
It is about uncovering the person that was already there.
The person hidden beneath fear.
The person buried beneath expectations.
The person waiting beneath all the noise.
And perhaps that is why this question refuses to leave me.
Because before I can understand my purpose...
Before I can understand where I am going...
Before I can understand why I am here...
I must first understand who is asking those questions.
Who am I?
The more I ask it...
The less interested I become in giving quick answers.
And the more interested I become in seeking the truth.
Because some questions are not meant to be rushed.
They are meant to be lived.
To be continued...
