Patubas Documentary Film Festival

Patubas Documentary Film Festival Come and enjoy our good harvest of stories and personal growth ๐ŸŒพ

"Patubas", derived from the Hiligaynon term for "harvest", is a documentary film festival organized by the College of Communication of West Visayas State University. In 2023, the instructors of three major courses of the Senior Broadcasting students collaborated to organize the first PATUBAS Documentary Film Festival as an alternative learning assessment (ALA) for these courses: BR225 (Producing D

ocumentaries for Broadcasting, Interactive and Emerging Media), BR229 (Sound Design for Broadcasting, Interactive and Emerging Media), and BR224 (Non-linear Post-production of Content for Broadcasting, Interactive and Emerging Media). This activity aimed to showcase the studentsโ€™ acquired skills in documentary film production, where they were mentored during the production process, their films evaluated and recognized according to their respective merits, and finally premiered in a public screening at the Cinematheque Centre Iloilo. This activity was driven by the notion that while film production technology today can enable anyone to easily produce their own films, making a film that can make a dent on its audienceโ€™s awareness and perspective of reality as well as impact change requires strategic training to achieve. The documentary films produced for these courses have been reaching a wider audience since their premiere. They have been featured in Academedia, a film screening activity under the Film Development Council of the Philippinesโ€™ (FDCP) program, Academic Film Society, during which the films were screened nationwide through different FDCP Cinematheques in the country. This is part of the College of Communicationโ€™s sincere pledge to provide our students with innovative learning experience in Film Literacy and Production through our Film Education and Production Program โ€“ a program that aims to create opportunities for students (1) to learn from industry practitioners/experts and (2) to produce their own films as their contribution to our countryโ€™s cultural, educational, and technological memory.

The strength of our program rests on three essential pillars: preparation, mentorship, and excellence. We believe that preparation is key, requiring students to equip themselves with strong production skills well before the cameras roll. Mentorship is provided by locally based, award-winning documentary filmmakers who provide the focused training and efficiency needed for professional results. We uphold a standard of excellence that challenges students to move beyond technical mastery toward deep, effective storytelling. Finally, we emphasize a commitment to stories that matter, ensuring every film serves a social purpose. Together, these pillars form the framework that allows our students to rise as impactful media practitioners.

Over the past three years, the festival has evolved into a robust platform for local creative expression and social advocacy. Student-produced films have consistently reached audiences that truly matter, making an impact both locally and on the international stage. By partnering with government agencies, we have fulfilled our goal of fostering collaboration among diverse social institutions. These alliances ensure our studentsโ€™ stories are woven into the fabric of civic discourse and public service. This journey proves that with preparation and excellence, student documentaries can thrive far beyond the classroom. We now look toward our 2026 event with a proven track record of multi-sectoral impact.

The Patubas Documentary Film Festival originated three years ago with a clear mission to bridge the gap between classroom learning and community impact. It was founded on the belief that documentary films are vital tools for raising awareness and compelling collective action. From its inception, the festival has viewed filmmaking as more than just an academic exercise for College of Communication students. We recognized that providing a dedicated platform would allow these young creators to engage directly with society. By establishing this foundation, we set the stage for students to give a voice to stories that truly matter. This beginning marked our commitment to fostering a new generation of storytellers.

๐–๐ก๐š๐ญ ๐ƒ๐ซ๐ข๐ฏ๐ž๐ฌ ๐”๐ฌ
Our primary motivation is the unique power of documentaries to communicate ideas and shape perspectives in a way few other mediums can. We are driven by the goal of transforming students into adaptive, effective communicators who can connect with significant audiences. The potential for social change serves as our North Star, pushing us to provide the strategic training necessary for high-impact work. We believe that when students are equipped with a strong mindset and technical excellence, their films can resonate deeply with the community. This passion for meaningful storytelling ensures that every project rises to a level of quality that inspires real-world response. Ultimately, we are fueled by the desire to see student work make a real and lasting difference.
