Singapore, 19 August 2025 — Singapore’s beloved independent cinema and arts venue, The Projector, will enter voluntary liquidation after a decade of championing alternative films, local creativity, and community-led programming.

Since opening its doors in 2014, The Projector has been more than a place to watch movies — it has been a cultural and events space where artists, filmmakers, and audiences gathered to experience cinema, creativity in its various forms and engage with diverse communities.

From showcasing award-winning independent films to hosting film festivals, like the Singapore International Film Festival, the European Film Festival, Pink Screen, poetry slams, vintage markets, and charity fundraisers, The Projector has remained committed to broadening the definition of cinema and a community space in Singapore.

However, the realities of the cinema industry have been increasingly unforgiving. Rising operational costs, shifting audience habits, and the global decline in cinema attendance have made sustaining an independent model in Singapore especially challenging. These pressures have been compounded by the broader realities of operating in the arts and culture sector in Singapore, where independent ventures navigate limited resources while contributing to the country’s evolving cultural landscape.

The Projector’s operations will cease on 19 August 2025, immediately following this announcement.

Welcome back to San Fernando Valley, courtesy of Paul Thomas Anderson.

MAGNOLIA is an epic mosaic of interrelated characters: a dying father, a young wife, a male caretaker, a famous lost son, a police officer in love, a boy genius, an ex-boy genius, a gameshow host and an estranged daughter. A fever dream of souls crashing, repentance, forgiveness and second chances.

Starring Tom Cruise, Philip Seymour Hoffman and Julianne Moore, the film is as intoxicating as the flower it's named after. An extraordinary picture about ordinary lives.

It's the 70s, and Larry "Doc" Sportello (Joaquin Phoenix) is investigating the disappearance of a former flame in drug-fuelled Los Angeles. Also in the lineup: Owen Wilson, Josh Brolin, Martin Short, Reese Witherspoon, Maya Rudolph and Benicio del Toro.

INHERENT VICE is Paul Thomas Anderson's stoner-noir adaptation of Thomas Pynchon's novel of the same name. Pynchon was a father of cyberpunk and a postmodern master, and also famously recluse... but he (allegedly) makes a cameo in Anderson's INHERENT VICE.

Come spot him on the big screen only at The Projector!

In a unique collaboration between Penguin SEA and The Projector, catch ILO ILO, the landmark debut film by Anthony Chen that stirred national conversation on family, belonging, and change.

The screening will be followed by a thought-provoking panel featuring authors and artists whose work speaks to the spirit of Singapore—past, present, and future. In a year where the nation looks back and ahead, this programme invites audiences to reimagine Singapore through the intimate lens of story and screen: to remember, to question, and to dream anew.

Is your love language physical touch? It won't be after you watch TOGETHER!

Starring real-life couple Alison Brie and Dave Franco, it's not a horror movie about whether love is the answer; it's a horror movie about what happens when love lingers past the point of comfort.

With a move to the countryside already testing the limits of Tim and Millie's relationship, a supernatural encounter begins an extreme transformation of their love, their lives... and their flesh.

Grab your codependent lover and come down to The Projector for a perfect date night movie.

TOGETHER (TBA)
Opens 21 August

We didn't win the NDP ticket ballot, but we have Photoshop! Here's what our favourite films would probably have put on their I Want To cards.

Ours would say 'I Want To say hi to K Rajagopal' (which you can actually do if you come for NAKED on 17 August)

We dont need any reason to screen Phantom Thread but your friends might need a reason to watch!

In what many believe to be his final acting role, Daniel Day-Lewis seamlessly transforms into the perfect fit in Paul Thomas Anderson’s haute couture-driven Oedipal Gothic romance, PHANTOM THREAD.

Renowned dressmaker Reynolds Woodcock (Day-Lewis) and his sister, Cyril, are at the heart of British fashion in 1950s London—dressing royalty, movie stars, heiresses, socialites, and debutantes. His carefully tailored life is soon disrupted by Alma (Vicky Krieps), a young and strong-willed woman who becomes his muse and lover.

What happens when someone who senses the best way to avoid a witch hunt is to set himself up as the fiercest witchfinder of all? This month’s $7 film, brought to you by Goethe-Institut Singapore, features Robert Schwentke’s exploration of the dark side of human nature, THE CAPTAIN.

Based on a true story, a German army deserter (Max Hubacher) discovers a N**i captain’s abandoned uniform during the final weeks of World War II. Empowered by the authority it suddenly grants him, he soon takes command of a camp that holds German soldiers accused of—taking on the monstrous identity of the villains he’s fleeing from.

This August, we're doing a local directors showcase with a twist! Five of Singapore's beloved filmmakers have each curated a pair of films: one made by them, and one that inspired them.

Quen Wong brings you Peter Chan's gender-bending romcom HE'S A WOMAN, SHE'S A MAN. Get the full picture by catching her own debut feature, groundbreaking Q***r documentary SOME WOMEN, paired with a special director Q&A session.

"It was on rewatching the film more than a decade later that I fully appreciated how radical a film it was for its time, and how clever it is as a 'mou lei tau' satire of its star, Leslie Cheung's own life under the scrutiny of the Hong Kong media. Plus, as we all know, Leslie Cheung is a film legend more than worthy of rewatching again and again." - Director Quen Wong
