Keep the dream of cinema alive in Austin! It takes a village to keep this little microcinema that could afloat. As a nonprofit, memberships are a vital way to sustain Hyperreal Film Club and ensure that we’re able to screen underseen gems and platform local filmmakers affordably and inclusively. Please consider joining the club or gifting a membership to a movie lover in your life! 🍿

What better way to soak in that Summer AC than at movies??

Have you ever wanted to go DEEPer into what it means to be a q***r erotic artist by those who traversed the anti-feminist-cis-experience-centered filmscape? Have you ever yearned for a genuine look INSIDE what it takes to make and survive the world of erotic creation and production—both inside and outside the mainstream? Are you ready to go LIVE with Legends who set the stage—and ask your own questions?

SEEN Moving Image presents a retrospective of the works of Annie Sprinkle and her dear friend and creative contemporary, Veronica Hart: featuring rare footage of their work in both the p**n and live art scenes from the 70s until now. Intersplicing clips from their vintage & seminal erotic films along with scenes from Annie Sprinkle’s “Herstory of Porn”, Sloppy Lolly will guide attendees through a reflection and inquiry into the work of these genre defining and expanding, q***r erotic feminist art-makers. Following the screening, Sloppy Lolly will host a live Q&A with Annie and Veronica (and perhaps a special guest?!) to allow questions from the audience. Are you a fan? A creator? Or just a pervacious appreciator? If SEEN, invites you DEEP INSIDE the world of these two erotic legends with us...

About SEEN
SEEN is a q***r coalition of moving image makers, researchers, and curators who aim to disrupt the system of pay to show festivals and censored q***r spaces. Through collaboration with other community driven and alternative art spaces, SEEN highlights self defined and nonconformist works to build a foundation for the rise of the Cinematic Gaze/Gayz.

Tomorrow (2/18) ~ AARON LOVES ANGELA
Part of ‘s Black Is Not a Genre series
Featuring local short film “La Hechicera” with filmmaker Angela New

Gordon Parks Jr., son of photographer and filmmaker Gordon Parks, only made four films before his untimely death in 1979. For what would be his final release, the followup to 1974’s THOMASINE & BUSHROD, the SUPER FLY director shifts gears from neo-western to teen romance with an endearingly light riff on Romeo and Juliet.

Future director Kevin Hooks (son of actor Robert Hooks, who also stars in the film) and future pop star Irene Cara (FAME, SPARKLE), in her film debut, play Aaron and Angela, two Harlem high schoolers in the throes of first love. The Shakespearean rub is that Aaron is Black and Angela is Puerto Rican. As expected, no one on either side of the ethnic divide approves, so they foster their mutual crush in secret.

But, ultimately the plot particulars give way to the film’s other love story: the one between Parks and Harlem itself. Shot entirely on location, what emerges is a rare time capsule of Black adolescent innocence set against a gritty yet tender version of Black and Latin New York that, even in 1975, was rapidly disappearing. The Legrand-esque melancholy of jazz guitar great and Spanish Harlem legend José Feliciano, who makes a cameo in the film, provides the perfect soundtrack—an unheralded classic of romantic cinema.
