Character Mini Bio:

Robert T. Jones Jr.
Amateur Golfing Hero.
Atlanta, Georgia
1902 - 1971

Jones was the most successful amateur golfer ever to compete at a national and international level. During his peak from 1923 to 1930, he dominated top-level amateur competition, and competed very successfully against the world's best professional golfers.

First and formost Bobby Jones Jr. maintained his Amateur Athlete status Vs turning Pro and earning big money, like Walter Hagen or Gene Sarazen. Had the Sport of Golf in the Summer Olympics been included during his heyday Jones would have easily medaled, probably Gold.

To make ends meet for his growing family in Atlanta Jones earned two degree's. One as an attorney from Emory U., the 2nd as an engineer from Georgia Tech Jones supported his family as a practicing lawyer with father Bob Jones Sr. LAW Firm. Not to exclude another degree in literature from Harvard.

Losing with dignity:

In the first round of the 1925 U.S. Open at theWorcester Country Club near Boston, his approach shot to the 11th hole's elevated green fell short into the deep rough of the embankment. As he took his stance to pitch onto the green, the head of his club brushed the grass and caused a slight movement of the ball. He took the shot, then informed his playing partner Walter Hagen and the USGA official covering their match that he was calling a penalty on himself. Hagen was unable to talk him out of it, and they continued play. After the round and before he signed his scorecard, officials argued with Jones but he insisted that he had violated Rule 18, moving a ball at rest after address, and took a 77 instead of the 76 he otherwise would have carded. Jones' self-imposed one-stroke penalty eventually cost him the win by a stroke in regulation, necessitating a playoff, which he then lost. Although praised by many sports writers for his gesture, Jones was reported to have said, "You might as well praise me for not robbing banks."

It happened again at his next U.S. Open but he still pulled out victory despite the 1 stroke penalty.

Jones is most famous for his unique "Grand Slam," consisting of his victory in all four major golf tournaments of his era (the open and amateur championships in both the U.S. & the U.K.) in a single calendar year (1930). In all Jones played in 31 majors, winning 13 and placing among the top ten finishers 27 times. No modern golfer has duplicated Jones SLAM to this day, not even Tiger.

Jones made a bet on himself achieving this feat with British bookmakers early in 1930, before the first tournament of the Slam, at odds of 50–1, and collected over $60,000 when he did it.

He is the only sports figure to receive two ticker-tape parades in New York City, the first in 1926 and the second in 1930 after his GRAND SLAM Triumph.

Jones is considered one of the five giants of the 1920s American sports scene, along with baseball's Babe Ruth, boxing's Jack Dempsey, football's Red Grange, and tennis player Bill Tilden.

Jones founded and helped design the Augusta National Golf Club in 1933, and co-founded the Masters Tournament in 1934 (except for 1943–45, when it was canceled due toWorld War II). The Masters evolved into one of golf's four major championships. innovations that he introduced at the Masters have been copied by virtually every professional golf tournament in the world. Today the Spring time tournament is Golf's first MAJOR of a calender year.

Son of St. Andrews, Scotland.

Citizens if St. Andrews adored Bobby Jones particulary after he left the Claret Jug Trophy from their St. Andrews OPEN behind for the city to enjoy.

In 1958, he was named a Freeman of the City of St Andrews, becoming only the second American to be so honored, the other being Benjamin Franklin in 1759.

LEGACY:

Inducted World Golf Hall of Fame in 1974.

Jones had a staggereing record as an Amateur in the MAJORS of the era often competing against golf professionals.

Best results in the then major championships

1930, he was honored with the first James E. Sullivan Award, awarded annually by the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) to the most outstanding amateur athlete in the United States.

In the early 1930s Jones worked with J Victor East (an Australian) of A.G. Spalding & Co. to develop the first set of matched steel-shafted clubs including Bobby Jones signature woods & irons.

During World War II, Jones served as an officer in the U.S. Army Air Corps. His superiors wanted him to play exhibition golf in the United States, but Jones was insistent on serving overseas in England rising to the rank of Lt. Col.

A special room is dedicated to Jones's life and accomplishments at the United States Golf Association Museum and Arnold Palmer Center for Golf History in Far Hills, New Jersey. Other Special displays for Jones are at the Atlanta Athletic Club & East Lake Golf Club, Bobby's home course.

In 1981, the U.S. Postal Service issued an 18-cent stamp commemorating Jones.

Jones was the subject of the quasi-biographical 2004 feature film Bobby Jones: A Stroke of Genius in which he was portrayed by Jim Caviezel.

Bobby Jones books, by him and about him. "Down the Fairway" by Jones considered a GOLF Classic. 1st editions considered quite rare & sought after.

One of the best biographical books being notable is The Life and Times of Bobby Jones: Portrait of a Gentleman by Sidney L. Matthew. Extremely well written and beautifully illustrated with terrific photos of Jones.

In 1948, Jones was diagnosed with syringomyelia, a fluid-filled cavity in the spinal cord that causes crippling pain, then paralysis; he was eventually restricted to a wheelchair. He died in Atlanta on December 18, 1971,

Before the Age of Palmer, Nicklaus & Tiger Woods Jones stood as a real iconic hero to golfing Amateurs & Pro's alike. His 119th Bday coming up this Mar. 17th, St. Patricks Day.

Character Mini Bio:

George Herman "Babe" Ruth - Baseball Icon
1895 - 1948
Baltimore, Maryland

Nicknamed "The Bambino" and "The Sultan of Swat", he began his MLB career as a star left-handedpitcher for the Boston Red Sox, but achieved his greatest fame as a slugging outfielder for the New York Yankees.

MLB Career: 1914 - 1935

Babe Ruth's a young Bad Boy:

"Babe" Ruth, possibly the best known, most revered athlete of Sports Golden Age & the 20th Century. History shows that Ruth had a little rough childhood, specifically he was a juvenile delinquent. As an adult, Ruth admitted that as a youth he ran the streets, rarely attended school, and drank beer (a passion continued as an adult) when his father was not looking.

What to do? What else, Ruth entered St. Mary's Reform School on June 13, 1902. He was recorded as "incorrigible" and spent much of the next 12 years there. There, he was exposed to Baseball and played often. Ruth later estimated that he played 200 games a year as he steadily climbed the ladder of success. His mentor & teacher, Brother Matthias turned the youth around, for which Ruth was grateful.

He was generous to St. Mary's as he became famous and rich, donating money and his presence at fundraisers, and spending $5,000 to buy Brother Matthias a Cadillac in 1926.

Although starting with Boston's Red Sox Ruth's best known for his 15 seasons with the New York Yankee's, setting many MLB records.

By far Ruth's best known record was slamming 60 homers as a Yankee in 1927 at the age of 32. A record lasting 34 years until Roger Maris, also a NY Yankee broke it in 1961 with 61 Outta Here's.

His big swing led to escalating home run totals that not only drew fans to the ballpark and boosted the sport's popularity but also helped usher in baseball's live-ball era, ( as compared to Ty Cobb's Dead-ball Era ). During his career, Ruth led the American League in home runs during a season 12 times.

Although Ruth was not just a power hitter—he was the Yankees' best bunter, and an excellent outfielder. Ruth's penchant for hitting home runs altered how baseball is played. Home Run's were a good winning strategy. Prior to 1920, home runs were unusual, and managers tried to win games by getting a runner on base and bringing him around to score ( Dead Ball ) through such means as the stolen base, the bunt, and the hit and run.

In his 15 years with the Yankees, Ruth helped the team win seven American League (AL) pennants and four World Series championships.

Newsworthy:

During Ruth's career, he was the target of intense press and public attention for his baseball exploits and off-field penchants for drinking and womanizing.

Ruth was the first baseball star to be the subject of overwhelming public adulation. Baseball had been known for star players such as Ty Cobb and "Shoeless Joe" Jackson, but both men had uneasy relations with fans. In Cobb's case he was accused of violence often.

In his history of the Yankees, Glenn Stout writes that "Ruth was New York incarnate—uncouth and raw, flamboyant and flashy, oversized, out of scale, and absolutely unstoppable".

"Babe" Ruth & Grantland Rice:

According to contemporary sportswriter Grantland Rice, only two sports figures of the 1920s approached Ruth in popularity—boxer Jack Dempsey and racehorse Man o' War. One of the factors that contributed to Ruth's broad appeal was the uncertainty about his family and early life. Ruth appeared to exemplify the American success story, that even an uneducated, unsophisticated youth, without any family wealth or connections, can do something better than anyone else in the world.

Legacy:

Ruth is regarded as one of the greatest sports heroes in American culture and is considered by many to be the greatest baseball player of all time. In 1936, Ruth was elected into the Baseball Hall of Fame as one of its "first five"inaugural members".

Ruth remains a part of American culture, and in 2018 President Donald Trump posthumously awarded him the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

Ruth continues to be ranked, tied or 2nd to the likes of Michael Jordan & Muhammad Ali, much more modern athletes as the greatest U.S. athlete of the century.

"Ruthian" as a word. Yes, he's in the dictionary. "Ruthian" has come to mean in sports, "colossal, dramatic, prodigious, magnificent; with great power". Sports Memoribilia, his sets record.
The most expensive piece of sports memorabilia ever sold is Ruth's 1920 Yankees jersey, which sold for $4,415,658 in 2012.

Books & Movies: In 2006, Montville stated that more books have been written about Ruth than any other member of the Baseball Hall of Fame. The Babe was the subject or as character in multiple movie, notably "Pride of the Yankees" 1942 - (Lou Gehrig) with Gary Cooper and "The Babe" - 1992 with John Goodman as Babe. Two of dozens others, 50 years apart.

Babe Ruth was one of the reasons I became a Yankee's fan. Him and the N.Y. Yankee's cool uniform. Babe Ruth passed away in 1948 in his beloved New York. His gravesite in Hawthorne, NY. 70 years after Babe Ruth's death, fans still flock to his grave & leave memorabilia for the Babe.

His memory will continue for decades to come.

MLB statistics:
Batting average .342
Hits. 2,873
Home runs. 714
Runs batted in 2,213
Win–loss record 94–46

"Witness to Glory" - The Grantland Rice Story Movie Screenplay FOR SALE.

Character Mini Bio:

Baseball great TY COBB. 1886 - 1961.
Nickname: "The Georgia Peach"
Royston, Gerorgia.
MLB Career: 1905 - 1928

Ty Cobb was an aggressively intense competitive ball player and sometime bad boy. Not exactly well liked by his teammates Cobb actions on and off the diamond always notable & news worthy.

Three weeks after his mother killed his father, Cobb debuted in center field for the Detroit Tigers. On August 30, 1905.

Although rookie hazing was customary, Cobb could not endure it in good humor and soon became alienated from his teammates. He later attributed his hostile temperament to this experience: "These old-timers turned me into a snarling wildcat!!!!

Sharp Spikes!!!!!

Ty Cobb invented the frontal base slide. In his case, with pregame newly sharpened steel spikes.

Tigers great Ty Cobb slides into St. Louis Browns catcher Paul Krichell in 1912.

Base Stealer!!!!

In 1907, Cobb reached first and then stole second, third and home. He accomplished the feat four times during his career, still an MLB record as of 2020.

Ranked 4th MLB career stolen bases with 897 steals with Ricky Henderson No. 1 with 1,406 steals.

Historian Steven Elliott Tripp writes that Cobb was both loved and hated as a representative of a particular kind of masculinity on the field, inviting male spectators to participate in the contest through taunts directed at opposing players.

While he was known for often violent conflicts, he spoke favorably about black players joining the Major Leagues and was a well known philanthropist.

Five years after Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier, Cobb publicly supported blacks and whites playing baseball together, adding, "Certainly it is okay for them to play. I see no reason in the world why we shouldn't compete with colored athletes as long as they conduct themselves with politeness and gentility.

Ty Cobb & Grantland Rice:

Reflecting on his career in 1930, two years after retiring, he told Grantland Rice, "The biggest thrill I ever got came in a game against the Athletics in 1907 [on September 30]... The Athletics had us beaten, with Rube Waddell pitching. They were two runs ahead in the 9th inning, when I happened to hit a home run that tied the score. This game went 17 innings to a tie, and a few days later, we clinched our first pennant.

Cobb's Legacy.....

Baseball historian Frank Russo wrote, "There is no denying that Cobb ranks as one of baseball's greatest players, if not the game's fiercest competitor.

Cobb has been judged by some historians and journalists as the best player of the dead-ball era (In baseball, the dead-ball era was the period from around 1900 to the emergence of Babe Ruth as a power hitter in 1919) and is generally seen as one of the greatest players of all time.

BASEBALL Hall of Fame:

In 1936, Cobb received the most votes of any player on the inaugural Baseball Hall of Fame ballot, receiving 222 out of a possible 226 votes (98.2%); no other player received a higher percentage of votes until Tom Seaver in 1992.

MLB Stastitics:
Batting average. .366
Hits. 4,191
Home runs. 117Runs
Batted in. 1,938
Stolen bases. 897

The greatness of Ty Cobb was something that had to be seen, and to see him was to remember him forever.

—George Sisler
