We’re excited to screen the short film A life of Surfing As old by Leah Dawson at this year’s at the Friday 6th Sept, 2024

Leah Dawson grew up a weekend warrior on the nose of her father's board in Florida. As her heart led her to Hawai'i, her creativity for capturing a frame blossomed alongside it. As an integral part of surfing event broadcast teams, her eyes have helped capture some of the most memorable moments in WSL history that were shared with the rest of the world. This is As Told By Leah Dawson. Since it hosted the first Championship Tour event ever in 1976, Sunset Beach has long stood as an old-school test of power surfing. And while timeless rail-to-rail surfing still dominates, a new school of surfers is beginning to redefine the wave with a more modern approach. Who will win out, and who heads to colder waters on a hot streak?

The festival is just two weeks away, and we're excited to announce the screening of *Mawja*. Filmed in 2018, the director aimed to capture women surfers in Morocco but faced challenges with the waves. Though the project was paused, five years later, they chose to share the inspiring stories they captured. Despite the passage of time, *Mawja* highlights the rapid progress and enduring influence of these fearless women.

For 11 years, the has been home to our This space has not only provided a welcoming venue for our event but has also been a cornerstone of the community, bringing people together through shared love for the ocean and surf culture. We’re grateful for the incredible memories and connections we’ve built here over the years.

We're happy to announce that the film “Camilla,” which intimately follows the journey of German surf champion Camilla Kemp, will be screened at the 11th annual September 5-7th, at Rockaway Beach, NY.

The portrait "CAMILLA" accompanies the German surf champion Camilla Kemp on her surfing journey. It delves deep into her moving story and shows the highs and lows she has faced in the sport of surfing. Camilla's inspiring journey includes the challenges of asserting herself as a woman in surfing and her change of identity when she decided to leave the Portuguese team in 2020 and surf under the German flag. The film portrays this significant change that has shaped Camilla's path with great empathy and authenticity. Filmmaker Sebastian Bechtel takes us to Camilla's hometown in Portugal, where her love for surfing was born. Through his lens, the film reveals the roots of her passion and gives us an intimate insight into her world, characterized by courage, determination, and the boundless pursuit of success.

The New York Women's Surf Film Festival, a project of Lava Girl Surf, celebrates the filmmakers and female wave riders who live to surf, highlighting their sense of adventure, connection to the ocean and love for their own communities and those they discover. In Rockaway Beach, New York, for two nights followed by Montauk, New York.. we'll share through film the spirit and inspiration of women wave riders from around the globe. Surfing is our passion. As women surfers, we share a special connection through our mutual love for the ocean and the creative energy sparked by celebrating our adventure stories.

The New York Women’s Surf Film Festival aims to generate awareness of this special subculture and the local businesses that support them. This is a FREE event.
