When I was in college, I had a teacher explain how graphic design is different from art because it’s our job to make something that is more than beautiful. When we create, we have a specific goal. We want the viewer to take action in some way.

We want our designs to market a business, inspire sales, and drive action.

The number one mistake you’re making when defining your target audience is…. 🫣

Focusing too much energy on the demographics.

☑️ The demographics are the measurable traits of your target audience: age, income, location, etc.

These traits are good to know, but they’re pretty surface level. Every 28 year old woman is not the same. Not by a long shot.

What you should be focusing on are the psychographics. ‼️

☑️ These are the immeasurable traits. Things like beliefs, attitudes, goals, etc.

These similar traits bond people more than their age or location.

When thinking about your target audience, focus on what they desire from their lives and how your business meets their needs.

Building your personal brand takes time.

The truth is a personal brand (different from your businesses brand - but just as vital! 👌🏻) is constantly evolving as we change and grow as people. So, how do you keep it consistent for your audience?

▪️Focus on your why.
▪️Hone in on your values, message, and mission.
▪️Highlight what makes you unique.

Stay true to those three pillars and don’t let the comparison game get to you. When you have your pillars to fall back on, everything else will fall into place.

Today is rainy and dreary in Minnesota 🌧️ It’s the kind of day that makes you want to eat soup and watch a movie.

First impressions matter… like a lot. The “above the fold” of your website holds more power than the latest iPhone. And most users aren’t that interested in what you have to say… so your visuals have to do the talking for you.

I know countless designers who hate Canva, but I’m not one of them.

Don’t get me wrong, I don’t use Canva for the majority of my work. For brand identities and the majority of my client work I use Adobe Illustrator.

However, I work with clients everyday that Canva is a life-saver in their business.

When I create templates for my clients, I always use Canva. It’s my job to make my clients' lives easier and not forcing them to learn or purchase a professional design software is just one of the small ways that I do that.
