Here's a reminder that the night before the Belcourt opens - this Thursday the 21st - we've got a pairing of films at TheLight&SoundMachine that we really can't express enough how excited we are to share.
Two 1hr documentaries - first up is Khalik Allah's FIELD NI**AS, a deceptively simple combination of street portraiture and conversation that has a mesmerizing, nearly hypnotic quality. Allah's work has a way of humanizing his marginalized subjects that is so incredibly powerful... It's also worth noting that since making FIELD NI**AS, Allah has also worked as a contributing cinematographer on Beyonce's LEMONADE.
The second half of the bill is the newly rediscovered 1984 documentary LOS SURES, about the predominately Puerto Rican neighborhood in Williamsburg, Brooklyn - which since the making of the film has endured a staggering wave of development.
By pairing the two films, viewers are afforded a survey of New York City spanning more than thirty years - one which illuminates issues of poverty, race, and gentrification that have become universal for all major American cities.
Given the current social climate and the ongoing national discussions surrounding criminal justice, police reform, and economic inequality, these films couldn't be more timely.
Hope to see everyone at Third Man on Thursday night. Doors at 7, films at 8 - come early for a selection of Allah's still photography, filmmaker interviews, and more!

With the passing of Nashville Scene editor Jim Ridley this afternoon, this city lost its greatest champion of film and the arts, a historian of all things Middle Tennessee, and a living emblem of human kindness and generosity. His praise and encouragement of our work at L&SM was limitless. One of the great joys of programming this series has been looking forward to the insights about each event Jim would offer, both in the Scene pages and in person. Speaking personally, I've lost a dear friend and mentor. Jim fostered my interest in cinema at a young age, and later offered me the opportunity to write about film for the Scene under his tutelage. A masterful editor, he consistently elevated the scratch of this untrained writer to elegant prose. I wish he were here now to refine this awkward eulogy. I'll never sound as smart without him. Thank you for everything Jim - your legacy will impact this world at a magnitude far beyond our comprehension. The movies won't be the same without you. - James Cathcart / TheLight&SoundMachine

In 1959, maverick filmmaker Lionel Rogosin followed his landmark docufiction ON THE BOWERY by covertly filming on the streets of Johannesburg, South Africa under the false pretense that he was making an innocuous musical featuring South African performers. Instead, the film he made was COME BACK, AFRICA - a scathing indictment of the country's harsh apartheid policies. Shot in a lightly scripted, quasi-documentary style, the film follows a young Zulu man as he attempts to navigate an unforgiving bureaucracy to find work to support his estranged family. The resulting film is a neo-realist monument of wrenching humanism, as well as a historically indispensable document of daily life in the black township of Sophiatown - demolished shortly after filming to make way for white-exclusive housing.

Thursday, February 18th at Third Man Records (Nashville, TN), co-hosted by the Belcourt Theatre.
