Black Cinema Collective

Black Cinema Collective We screen + examine local and global works of African + African diasporic filmmakers.

Black Cinema Collective (BCC) is a Washington-based group of artists and scholars who examine and celebrate works of African and African diasporic filmmakers through programmed screenings, watch parties, and community discussions. With both a Black Feminist and Black Global lens, we hold space for the complex existence and storytelling inventions of Diasporians. We consider intersectional histori

es and topical stories by supporting multiple forms of filmmaking from local and global artists, activists, documentarians, and organizers. Through our focused events on Black film and visual productions, we exercise agency and care as custodians and students of a broader spectrum of Afro-Diasporic cultures. So much gratitude to our RiZe Up beneficiaries, who are on the ground Jamaica doing the work to rebuild and provide relief ♥️

⭐️Donisha Prendergast (), Humanity Ova Vanity founder carries the spirit of her grandparents Bob and Rita Marley as a thought-provoking, multi-dimensional creator and social impact consultant across various projects. Through .to__, she creates space for art as intervention, as healing, as resistance. Donisha has been organizing relief efforts in Petersfield, Westmoreland since Hurricane Melissa hit last Nov, connecting with local organizers and community leaders to strategize and support rebuilding and recovery efforts.

⭐️Don-Roy Graham is founder of Such n Such Homestead (), an independent homestead farm dedicated to learning and teaching others how to sustainably create food + land sovereignty. Don-Roy, who also lost his home in Hurricane Melissa with severe damage to his farm, immediately got to work helping others. He canvasses rural areas by car, foot, and bike, using posts to amplify community needs. His appeals for assistance went viral, inspiring thousands of people in Jamaica to follow and support what many believe is the work of a true humanitarian.

RiZe Up is TOMORROW! Get your tickets to support these two incredible organizations and the work they are doing!

🎵Don’t miss DJ TOPSPIN () at , spinning energizing tracks from across the diaspora!

DJ TOPSPIN [aka BLENDIANA JONES] is established as a musical pillar in the Northwest and across the world. He [seemingly] easily weaves a complex blend of hits & unearthed genre-spanning gems from both past & present eras, creating a musical tapestry all his own. He’s particularly renowned for his harmonic ear, showcased by his signature blends / remixes, selection & timing; as evidenced by the “a.k.a. BLENDIANA JONES” addition to his moniker. The nickname says it all, as he’s left his sonic imprint on Seattle’s cultural nightlife scene throughout the span of his 30+ year career & has plans to continue taking his talents far & wide globally. His ability to read a room & sonically satisfy the various cultures within, are unmatched. Born from a Jamaican father & Panamanian mother, the pulse of the diaspora [in the form of dancehall / reggae / soca / afrobeat] is always present in his musical displays. ‘Harmony-heavy flavor for those that love to dance’ is the envelope he pushes via the records [he pushes & pulls]. Make no mistake; you “need it from the TOP!”

🚨Upcoming Film Screening & Fundraiser!

🎬LIFE + DEBT (2001)
87 minutes
🎥Dir. Stephanie Black ()

As a part of the upcoming RiZe Up for Jamaica Fundraiser, we are honored to present the first of many 25-year Anniversary screenings of the award-winning film, LIFE + DEBT (2001). Utilizing excerpts from the award-winning non-fiction text “A Small Place” by Jamaica Kincaid, LIFE + DEBT is a woven tapestry of sequences focusing on the stories of individual Jamaicans whose strategies for survival and parameters of day-to-day existence are determined by the U.S. and other foreign economic agendas. Known as a tropical destiny of sea, sand, and sun - Jamaica is also a prime example of the complexities of economic globalization. Using conventional and unconventional documentary techniques, this searing film dissects the “mechanism of debt” by addressing the impact of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the World Bank, the Inter-American Development Bank and current globalization policies on trade on developing regions. With voice-over narration written by Jamaica Kincaid and performed by Belinda Becker, LIFE + DEBT is an unapologetic look at the “new world order” and the reality of globalization we live with today.
Catch LIFE + DEBT, followed by a community talkback, as one of the many offerings part of our upcoming fundraiser event, RiZe Up for Jamaica
