Lost film by the deceased Chilean filmmaker Raúl Ruiz, completed by Valeria Sarmiento, a prominent national filmmaker and the director's widow. The film was shot in 1990 with actors from different teleseries of the time, and tries to capture reality through characters who play with the typical patterns of Chilean archetipes, in order to install the idea that “all of Chile is a telenovela”.

The documentary follows the growing influence of the evangelical movement in Latin American politics (in specific, Brazil), especially during Jair Bolsonaro's tenure as president of Brazil. Costa gains unprecedented access to the closest circle of Bolsonaro: far-right televangelist Silas Malafaia. Malafaia's growing undeniable influence on bolsonarism, since the pandemic in Brazil, is also a key part of the results of the 2022 presidential election (in which Bolsonaro was narrowly defeated) and the coup attempt of the following months.

At the same time, Costa examines the attempts of Bolsonaro's leftist successor, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (elected for an unprecedented third non-consecutive term), to unify religious discourse into a Democratic instance.

🐇🎞️ 🐇 In summer of 1985, at the José Borda Psychiatric Hospital in Buenos Aires, staff psychiatrist Dr. Julio Denis is surprised to find an unidentified patient at the ward for non-violent delusional cases playing the chapel organ proficiently. Summoning him to his office, the patient introduces himself as Rantés (an exotic-sounding name in Argentina) and claims to be a holographic projection from another planet. Dr. Denis speculates that Rantés might be a fugitive hiding from the law but lets him stay after seeing how his caring touch helps the other patients. The doctor is amused by his extraterrestrial claims and suspects that the man is a genius using his talents as a charade.

In an uncertain future, Bacurau, a small village in the Brazilian sertão, mourns the loss of its matriarch, Carmelita, who lived to be 94. Days later, its inhabitants (among them Sônia Braga) notice that their village has literally vanished from online maps and a UFO-shaped drone is seen flying overhead. There are forces that want to expel them from their homes, and soon a band of armed mercenaries led by Udo Kier arrive in town picking off the inhabitants one by one. A fierce confrontation takes place when the townspeople turn the tables on the villainous outsiders, banding together by any means necessary to protect and maintain their remote community. The mercenaries just may have met their match in the fed-up, resourceful denizens of little Bacurau.

Yolanda, a young teacher, does not find the best method to teach children from slums because she is from a different social background. Mario, a macho “mulato” worker at an automotive factory, is confronted by Yolanda's instinct for emancipation.  Despite their differences, the two become lovers. Their relationship represents the idea that racism, sexism, and class prejudices must be overcome to achieve a better country.

Esta noche fue una inauguración magnífica para el curso de ciencia ficción latinoamericana. Gracias a tod_s en la audiencia por participar y aportar ideas y perspectivas tan iluminadoras a una de las películas más importantes de la historia del continente. Gracias en especial a Ariel Casós Vello por facilitarme una versión de calidad espectacular para la proyección y también a Fleisher Art Memorial por invitarme un año más para traer el mejor cine latinoamericano a la ciudad.
