On Film

On Film Screenings at the University of Rochester Each of our sessions has a theme (walls, landscape, etc.).

Our mission is threefold:

-To bring rarely-seen and important films from around the world.

-To show films in 16mm or 35mm prints and encourage discussion about the materiality as well as the contents of the films.

-To facilitate informal discussions about these films and offer an opportunity for students, faculties, and the communities to experience the films as an event. By showing diverse set

s of films back to back, we hope to facilitate the chance to encounter movies both as singular objects in their own right and at the same time to make unexpected discoveries about the ways in which they might co-inform, both on the level of sameness and difference, and in terms of their material, formal, and narrative conditions.

On Film—in collaboration with the Program for Dance and Movement and as part of the Rochester Fringe Festival—is excited to present A Body in Places, a curated selection of works by celebrated movement artist Eiko Otake, who will join us virtually to present the performance and for a Q&A session afterwards. This event will be held in Spurrier Hall at 6 PM.

Spanning four decades of Eiko's career, the works presented here showcase her longstanding devotion to capturing movement in motion, highlighting collaborations between body and camera, as well as between body and its surrounding environment. This event is part of Dance On Film, a series which will run throughout the 2025-2026 academic year devoted to the intersection of dance and film.

Tickets are $15 or free for students with ID and can be purchased here.

Made possible with the support of the Schwartz Performing Arts Fund of the Institute for the Performing Arts, the Visual and Cultural Studies Program, Film and Media Studies, the University Committee for Interdisciplinary Studies, the Humanities Project, the Central New York Humanities Corridor, and the Department of Modern Languages and Culture.

The 24th installment of the On Film series, Screening Medicine, begins next week with Claire Simon's 2023 documentary Our Body. As always, this event is free and open to the public. The screening takes place at 5pm on Wednesday, February 14th.
We are very excited to be opening our series with this important documentary. The film traces the day-to-day operations of a gynocology ward in a Parisian public hospital, and it is of particular importance in this moment when women and transgender people are fighting for their right to health care. Simon's documentary gives a demystifying and deobjectifying look at the bodies of medical patients and the people that care for them. Please join us for this screening next Wednesday evening in the Gowan room at Wilson Commons.
