How 1,400°F heat met 13th-century engineering. 🏛️🔥On April 15, 2019, the world watched in horror as fire tore through Notre Dame Cathedral. The roof collapsed, the spire fell, and temperatures surpassed 800°C. By all modern glazing standards, the historic stained glass should have experienced catastrophic thermal shock and shattered into dust.Yet, the iconic Rose Windows survived. For glaziers, architects, and structural engineers, the survival of Notre Dame’s glass isn’t just a miracle—it’s a masterclass in resilient design:The Structural Shield: The cathedral’s Gothic stone vaulting and heavy stone tracery acted as a literal firewall, absorbing mechanical impacts and deflecting the thermal load.Thermal Shock Resistance: Medieval stained glass is structurally flexible. Instead of one large sheet, thousands of small glass pieces are woven into malleable lead cames, allowing the system to expand and flex under extreme stress. The Restoration Hurdle: The real battle began after the fire. Over a 9-month period, conservation teams used X-ray spectroscopy and a strict “5-wipe protocol” to remove toxic lead dust and carbon soot without stripping the 800-year-old painted details.Today, the dialogue has shifted from preservation to architectural evolution. With plans moving forward to replace six undamaged 19th-century windows with contemporary designs by Claire Tabouret, the industry is split on balancing historical preservation with modern artistic intent.Architects and glaziers: What’s your take on the new window controversy? Should we preserve the historical fabric entirely, or introduce modern glazing art to landmark restorations?Let’s talk shop in the comments! 👇

I’ve seen dozens of posts saying Happy Labor Day to those dedicated to their work. They really trying to change the narrative or just pure ignorance?

If you know what movie this broken glass scene is from, we’d probably be friends. Give a like if you know!

It’s not your fault if you didn’t know—school never taught us real labor history, and that was by design.
Labor Day isn’t just a high-five for having a job or an excuse to fire up the grill before summer ends. It was fought for and won by trade workers who refused to be treated like disposable parts, forcing this country to lock in weekends, basic safety standards, and the 40-hour workweek.
Enjoy the day off, but respect the hands that actually built it. ✊🇺🇸

This isn’t your standard glass roof. It’s a 25-meter-high, ovoid “glass and steel shell” made up of 188 individual panels seamlessly connected by 288 custom steel nodes. Using pioneering 3D parametric design and hot-bending engineering, the double-curved glass flows effortlessly against the building’s original, historic cut stone walls.

Came across this new high-rise while walking around today and had to grab some footage of the glass configuration.
You can tell the architects were trying to push the envelope on paper, but all I see is the absolute headache this layout was for the glazier crew on the bucks. It’s easy to render shifting geometry on a computer screen—it’s a whole different game when you’re out in the wind trying to hoist, line up, and bolt down modular units when every single floor changes on you. 🏙️🙌
