"This week in weather history: Hurricane Wilma reached the U.S. on October 24, 2005, crossing Florida after becoming the most intense Atlantic hurricane ever recorded by central pressure. It capped off the historic 2005 hurricane season - the same year as Katrina and Rita - and remains a benchmark storm for measuring hurricane intensity.

"Lake Baikal in Siberia is the deepest and oldest freshwater lake on Earth - over 5,300 feet deep and more than 25 million years old. Despite covering less surface area than the Great Lakes combined, its sheer depth means it holds roughly 20% of all the unfrozen fresh surface water on the planet, all in a single lake.

"As the fog rolls in thicker this time of year, ""Foggy Fall Festival"" keeps coming up as a favorite for read-alouds right before bed - something about a misty autumn story just fits October evenings. If your family's building a fall reading stack, this is the one to add next.

The temperature on the forecast isn't always what your body actually feels - that's what the heat index is for. It combines air temperature and humidity into a single "feels like" number, because high humidity slows down how efficiently sweat can ev***rate off your skin, which is your body's main way of cooling itself. It's a big part of how schools and coaches decide when outdoor activity gets too risky.

"Turn on a tap and clean water comes out instantly - most of us never think twice about it. Right now, 1 in 4 people worldwide (2.1 billion) don't have access to safely managed drinking water.

So what do they do instead? Millions walk 30+ minutes each way just to reach a water source, often carrying it home by hand. Others rely on unprotected wells and springs, or drink straight from rivers and ponds - water that can carry cholera, dysentery, and typhoid. In many families, it's the kids who make that walk instead of going to school.

Clean water at the tap is precious. What's one way your family could use it more mindfully today?

"Here's a fun one for fog season: fog is technically just a cloud that's touching the ground. It forms the exact same way a stratus cloud does - water v***r condensing into tiny droplets - the only difference is that it happens right at ground level instead of thousands of feet up. So next time you're walking through fog on a fall morning, you're literally walking through a cloud.

"This week's Teacher's Corner freebie is a Grade 2&3 ""Weather Symbols Matching"" activity - kids match the simple icons forecasters use on maps and apps (sun, cloud, rain, snow, lightning, wind) to what each one means. Great intro to reading a real forecast.

"On this day in weather history: October 13, 2006, an unusually early and intense lake-effect snowstorm - nicknamed ""Lake Storm Aphid"" - buried the Buffalo, New York area, dropping 15 inches of snow downtown and up to 24 inches in nearby suburbs. Because trees still had their leaves, the wet, heavy snow snapped countless branches, knocking out power to hundreds of thousands of people for days. A reminder that an early-season storm can be just as disruptive as a mid-winter one.

"Today is observed as Columbus Day in some places and Indigenous Peoples' Day in others. In that spirit, here's a weather fact worth knowing: long before modern meteorology, Indigenous peoples across North America tracked seasonal winds, cloud patterns, animal behavior, and plant cycles to forecast weather and plan planting, hunting, and travel - traditional ecological knowledge passed down and refined over countless generations, some of which modern climate researchers still study today.
