Boyd Petersen, a local author, writes a Christmas story each year for his family. A few years ago he started allowing others to download and enjoy these short stories for themselves. This year, he has just released his newest story called “The Gladiator Merchant.”

It begins, “It has just been a few years since I was the captain of the guards and the personal gladiator for King Herod. I was given everything a person could want and all I had to do was protect the king and fight some would-be assassins. There was always food, drink and women around for the taking.

Have you ever wished you could change something that you did or didn't do in your life? I would want to change several things but none more than a fateful trip from Bethlehem to Egypt. But in order for you to understand my story, I’ve got to start from before I was born.”

This inspirational story is designed, like Petersen’s other stories, to tell about some of the people that either were already in Bethlehem or traveled, like Mary and Joseph, to Bethlehem at the time of Christ’s birth or before they escaped to Egypt.

“I have been writing bits and pieces for years and a story about Christ at this time of year is a natural,” Petersen said. “This one sets the stage for Christ and his family to go to Egypt to escape the imminent threat from Herod.”
Petersen was inspired by the story of a little shepherd boy many years ago and wanted to give many of those who played a part in the story of the birth of our Savior a voice.

Petersen’s other Christmas stories (five in all) are found in a compilation book called “Tales of Bethlehem.” It includes the story of the shepherds that heard and saw the angels and another about a couple of boys that get to play their instruments (not a drum) for the newborn King. There is also the story of a Prince that makes the journey to Bethlehem only to have the star disappear the night before they arrive. They do find him in a battle for good. Interwoven into each are some flashbacks and looks forward to the life of Christ and other well-known Biblical characters.

Former NASCAR driver and NBC Sports racing analyst Kyle Petty will be visiting Utah as part of his 25th annual Kyle Petty Charity Ride Across America. Mountain West Chorale is hosting its 23rd annual Spring Festival on April 26. It will feature community choirs from across the Wasatch Front. The concert will begin at 7 p.m. at Herriman High School, 11917 S. Mustang Trail Way in Herriman. The event traditionally features 4 to 6 choirs each year. The public is invited to this free event.
