These days, “sustainability” starts to feel like a buzzword instead of an actual purpose – but we shouldn’t allow that to let us lose sight of its importance.

How does sustainability tie into manufacturing? Here are a few different ways…

🔺 Your Materials.
• Are your fabrics from natural or eco-friendly or plant-based fibers?
• Are you using any recycled or repurposed goods?
• Are the trims you use made of sustainable or ethical materials?

🔺 Your Factory(s).
• Does your factory have a less or zero waste mindset/mentality?
• Do they treat their workers fairly?
• Do they cut down on energy and pollution emissions?

🔺 Your Final Package.
• Are you using sustainable, eco-friendly materials in your packaging?
• What shipping method are you using to send your customers’ orders to them?

A conscious, long-lasting design that brings joy to your customers is also a sustainable choice.

The work to maximize a product's lifecycle and make it as sustainable as possible begins on the designer's drawing board, and the raw materials choices play an important role in this process. Another key role is the manufacturing partner of the product. And then there's the packaging...

When thinking about the journey taking our industry towards a more sustainable future, start with the design.

I heard a quote the other day that I now have hanging on my wall. It goes like this….

“MY MOST IMPORTANT VALUE IS BEING HAPPY.
WITH THAT COMES DOING THINGS THAT MAKE YOU HAPPY, AND MAKING THINGS YOU’RE PROUD OF MAKING.”

Wish I had thought of it myself because I couldn’t agree more!

So thank you to Simon Wick, Co-founder of Denmark’s streetwear brand (di)vision, who actually said it.

This is so important in everyday life - in business and personal.

If you’re a newer brand or even an aspiring brand owner, you might be sweating a little bit reading this – but don’t worry, it doesn’t need to feel difficult or complex!

I suggest applying the “Progress-Not- Perfection” motto to this. This is not a one-and-done type of thing. Making progress means being open to imperfections, failing forward, and refining as you go along. Every situation is different, and will require different thinking.

As you’re creating your product line, just make sure you look at things through a lens of sustainability.

Compare your fabric choices ….what they’re made from and how they are produced. Same for any trims you use… what are they made from and how are they produced?

Look at your manufacturers and their practices. Look for certifications from your vendors to help you quickly identify those who value the same things you do. At the end of a product’s life, can the materials be reused to make new products, or can they be recycled?

These are just a few examples to start you thinking through a lens of sustainability and social impact.

is about knowing that the impossible is possible – if we act together.

It means taking back our world because it belongs to all of US, not just a few.

The power is in our hands to turn apathy into action.

It’s time to tell a new story that shapes a new reality.

The UN’s SDGs provide a blueprint for us all to get there. Check them out by visiting https://sdgs.un.org/goals

After decades of working with both startups and large global brands across different business sectors from fashion to hospitality, I’ve noticed something: The creative process is exactly the same - whether you’re designing a line of designer tee shirts or a collection of cocktail accessories for a high-end hotel.

That’s why I created the 4-phase process, the I.D.E.A. Framework. It spans the entire creative journey - from concept through finished product - and into the hands of your loving customers.

Here’s how it works:
I. 🔺 IMAGINE. - Zig Where Everyone Zags.
D. 🔺 DESIGN. - From Concept to Completion.
E. 🔺 EXECUTE. - Flawless Details Delivered.
A. 🔺 ACCELERATE. - Amplify Your Brand With Purpose.

The future is a bright and exciting place for creatives – we are living through such a time of transformation….in all aspects, in every industry and business sector.

Consumer demands are changing. Brand experiences are changing. And the way we view the world around us and the resources that it provides is changing, too.

From the metaverse, to commitments to reducing our carbon footprint, to treating our customers as more than a number, it’s the perfect time to become a trailblazer and set the new standard through the actions of your brand.

🔺 What will you do to start? 🔺

14/07/2022

You can incorporate PURPOSE at every stage of the process - from design to delivery.

New innovations in materials development challenge us to rethink every step of how a product is made, starting from its design. New materials made from fruit waste. Natural plant resources used to create dyes that color our designs. These innovations and many more are promising because they fundamentally change the way we do business, creating opportunities for a new system that’s better for people and planet alike.
