Once all the crops have been harvested, what happens to the stuff left over? Discover the world of gleaning through a free film screening of The Gleaners and I (2000) by Agnès Varda at Chauffeurs Cottage on Monday 18 November from 7pm.

The Gleaners and I is a poetic and deeply personal documentary exploring themes of waste, resourcefulness, and the overlooked lives of those who make use of society's excess. This unique film screening has been brought to us by Cine-Sister and offers an insight into how circumstances, especially scarcity or social need, drive creativity and new approaches to survival.

In November 2017, Cine-Sister hosted its first Peterborough film screening at Chauffeur’s Cottage; in November 2024, it will be doing its last at the venue.

We’re incredibly sad about Metal and other organisations being asked to leave Chauffeur’s Cottage by the end of the year but we’re helping them go out with a bang with a special screening of the beautiful documentary The Gleaners and I (2000) as part of Metal’s What’s Possible When Things Go Wrong. A series of celebrations, sharings, and dinners to mark our final moments in the building and to explore what is possible when the sh*t hits the fan.

The Gleaners and I is a poetic and deeply personal documentary that explores themes of waste, resourcefulness, and the overlooked lives of those who make use of society's excess. Directed by French filmmaker Agnès Varda, the film blends observational footage with intimate, reflective narration as Varda sets out to document the practice of "gleaning"—the age-old act of collecting leftover crops from fields after harvest—while also expanding this concept to urban settings where people salvage food, objects, and materials discarded by others. The gleaners' resourcefulness and resilience highlight how circumstances, especially scarcity or social need, drive creativity and new approaches to survival. The Gleaners and I serves as a portrait of people and a filmmaker embracing necessity as a catalyst for invention and creativity.
