Round 2 of trying to improve the Tom Suriya’s mural “You are the Star” on Wilcox and Hollywood Boulevard. The last vinyl overlay had failed. While we await a true restoration of this mural, the vinyl is a creative way to improve temporarily.

Glad to see the Hollywood mural has been cleaned and restored on Hollywood Blvd and Wilcox! Hopefully it stays (although it has been already tagged in a few spots). Where else will you find Theda Bara and Mary Pickford sitting in a theater together?

Happy Heavenly Birthday Week to Mary Pickford. I say week because she was born between April 8th and the 9th and would sometimes celebrate her birthday on the 8th and sometimes the 9th. And with the excitement of the current travel around the moon. Here is Mary with the moon by Nelson Evans. Also, placed a couple new rose plants in the Pickford memorial garden.

Since it is Olive Thomas’s birthday today (born in 1894), thought we would highlight a new poster acquisition of ours. This was a poster I had always wished for but I’ve only seen one come up for auction years ago, but now we have it on our wall. Olive was a Ziegfeld girl as part of the Ziegfeld Follies & Midnight Frolic before becoming an actress and at times, referred to as the first “flapper girl.” She would then marry Mary Pickford’s brother Jack before her untimely death in 1920 at the age of 25. On this personality poster of Olive, she is representing Selznick Pictures presented by Myron Selznick. Myron was David O. Selznick’s older brother and he worked for his father who owned the studio. In 1918, Myron who was only 20 years old, convinced his father to sign Olive for $1000 a week. Of course, our little dog who is also named Olive (after Olive Thomas) insisted her photo be included in this post.

I hope you had a wonderful and safe 4th of July. Going through some of our Mary Pickford files, is her speech she wrote for a dinner in her honor at the Mayflower Hotel on March 31, 1953. It had marked her 35th anniversary when she embarked on a cross-country campaign during World War I to promote the sale of Liberty Bonds. She was on a similar campaign at the time of this dinner. A speech that she gave 72 years ago, can be said the same today. Here are some excerpts from this long speech.

“…A good many kind people helped me along the way, but none of them has wings or a magic wand. There was a woman with magic powers in my life, but she carries a torch. There is a statue of her in New York harbor.”

“Coming from Canada, we were not, of course, fleeing from tyranny or oppression. All the Goddess of Liberty had to offer me was opportunity.”

“I can only do my best to repay part of my debt by working to preserve and strengthen this country as every good citizen should.”

“In this country, our success stories are different. For this is still a great land of opportunity, even if the worthy do not always succeed.”

“No Cinderella has yet been nominated for President, but there are a few positions of power to which American women cannot win their way. As for Aladdin, in this country he would not find an old magic lamp; he would invent a new kind of lamp as Edison did.

“We take our freedom and our opportunities for betterment so much for granted that most of us appreciate them only when we face threat of losing them. Some Americans haven’t yet faced up to the fact that we could lose our freedoms and material blessings, if not our lives, to a sinister force of godless men who envy us, and plot and wait for us to weaken. Freedom is not something we get free. It must be paid for.

Happy Heavenly birthday today to Mary Pickford! (1892-1979).

How great is the image of Mary at the Famous Players-Lasky/Paramount Studio lot with the Lasky-DeMille Barn in the background?! Now this barn is the museum.

But did you know Mary actually celebrated her birthday on April 9? That’s okay, we are more than happy to celebrate two days in a row. Mary gave different reasons as to why she celebrated her birthday on April 9, one being her father’s birthday was April 8. She was so dedicated to having her birthday on April 9 that her driver’s license and even death certificate gives her date of birth as the 9th. But indeed, birth records confirm the 8th.

A few other items pulled from our collection is a sweet birthday note Buddy left for Mary. Also, a glass slide from Little Annie Rooney with the melancholy birthday cake scene.

This past weekend and I made a quick stop to visit Mary at Forest Lawn and brought her some Easter Lillies.

105 years ago, one of the first power couples in Hollywood married, Mary Pickford and Douglas Fairbanks. Though the marriage would only last about 16 years, Douglas Fairbanks Jr. said “Douglas Fairbanks and Mary Pickford came to mean more than a couple of married film stars. They were a living proof of America’s chronic belief in happy endings.” Yet the event itself was deliberately understated. They were married in the minister’s study and then celebrated a quiet dinner at Pickfair. Only one photo has been known from this day. We are fortunate to have Douglas Fairbanks, Jr. original photo he used for his book, The Fairbanks Album. Also, we have a photo of Mary in her white tulle and satin dress with apple green trim that she signed to Fairbanks, Jr. (along with one she signed to Fred Niblo).
