Switzerland has approved a pioneering project to install removable solar panels between railway tracks, turning otherwise unused rail space into a source of clean electricity. The pilot project is designed to generate renewable power without disrupting normal train operations.

The system uses specially designed photovoltaic panels that can be removed when railway maintenance is required. By using existing railway corridors instead of additional land, Switzerland aims to expand solar generation while limiting competition for land.

The project demonstrates how infrastructure already used for transportation could also produce renewable energy. If the approach proves practical and economical, similar solar installations could help supply more electricity for Switzerland’s railway system.

In the early 1990s, Han Junjia began his career driving coal-fired steam locomotives, working in smoky cabs where windows had to remain open to watch the track and signals. Twenty-six years later, he was driving a modern Fuxing high-speed train capable of around 350 km/h.

His career mirrors China’s dramatic railway transformation, from steam to diesel, then electric trains and finally high-speed rail. By the end of 2024, China had about 48,000 km of high-speed rail and carried more than 4.3 billion railway passenger trips that year.

Two photographs of the same driver capture this extraordinary change in a single lifetime - from soot-filled locomotives to advanced bullet trains. His journey shows how rapidly massive investment in infrastructure and technology can transform an entire transportation system.
