Les Ballets de Monte-Carlo « Roméo et Juliette »
Shakespeare’s timeless story of star-crossed lovers is a favourite with choreographers, and Jean-Christophe Maillot, (the choreographer-director of Les Ballets de Monte-Carlo) has created a new classic set to Prokofiev’s masterpiece, which will make its opening in Dubai for 3 consecutive nights at Madinat Arena – Madinat Jumeirah from 15 to 17 January 2015.
“Romeo and Juliet” the tragedy written by William Shakespeare early in his career about two star-crossed young lovers whose deaths ultimately reconcile their feuding families was among Shakespeare's most popular plays during his lifetime, and at present belongs to a tradition of tragic romances stretching back to antiquity.
Today, the infamous play has been lovingly revisited into a spectacular ballet, by the world famous Les Ballets de Monte-Carlo. In his distinctive version of “Romeo and Juliet”, Jean-Christophe Maillot has taken key inspiration from the episodic character of Sergei Prokofiev's score; structuring master-strokes in a manner akin to cinematic narrative, with the stage housing no less than 40-accomplished dancers.
In reference to the storyline, rather than focusing on the themes of political-social opposition between the two feuding clans, this Romeo and Juliet highlight the dualities of adolescence. Torn between contradictory impulses, between tenderness and violence, fear and pride, the two lovers are caught in the midst of a tragedy that exemplifies their youth and the extreme emotions that characterise that time of life. A time when destiny seems to escape conscious control, and when the inner turmoil moulded by passion can sometimes have disproportionate - even fatal - consequences.
In evoking this fragile and volatile state of being, the décor reflects a sense of airy transparency and lightness: a play of simple forms that reveals an underlying complexity of meaning. Aided by spectacular art direction, and live music that will be furnished by the renowned orchestra Kirov Orchestra, Saint Petersburg, (also known as the Mariinsky Theatre Orchestra), which was founded in 1783, and is one of the oldest and leading musical institutions in Russia. The current artistic and conductor is Valery Abisalovich Gergiev.
Don’t miss a night bursting with grace and beauty; a night that will be as memorable as nothing precedent, in that it’s both dramatic and fleeting and one that will live with you in an instant and in eternity; a night not to be missed!
The prestigious event is supported by Dubai Shopping Festival, and Rashid Centre for the Disabled, to name a few, and brought to you by ROTANA.
40 dancers will be on stage with a great set all coming from Monaco to present the performance for the first time in the UAE.
