Spend an evening under the stars at Darwin's premier outdoor cinema, the Deckchair Cinema. We're an award winning outdoor cinema on the edge of Darwin’s Harbour open 7 nights a week from mid-April to mid-November. Come down early and enjoy a refreshing beverage from our fully licensed kiosk (no BYO) or feast your taste buds on a hot meal. Gates open nightly at 5.45pm so you can enjoy a tropical sunset before the 7.00pm screening. We are easily accessible via a well-lit, picturesque walkway from the City (via The Esplanade-Damoe Ra Walkway) or the Waterfront Precinct, and there is plenty of parking and bike racks available on site. The Deckchair Cinema is operated by the Darwin Film Society, established in 1954, to give Darwin audiences access to movies that would otherwise go unseen on the big screen. Being Darwin's only independent cinema our program is a diverse range of Australian, popular, family, foreign and classic films. The Darwin Film Society also operate Flix in the Wet (Sunday afternoons, January through March) and the Darwin International Film Festival (annually in September). TERMS OF USE OF OUR FACEBOOK PAGE

Asia Kate Dillon gives an award-winning lead performance in Outerlands, an intimate new drama about q***r life, survival and the unexpected ways people become family.

Cass is doing whatever it takes to stay afloat in San Francisco. They work as a nanny, wait tables and sell party drugs on the side, piecing together enough money to cover the rent on a tiny apartment.

Then Cass hooks up with Kalli, a co-worker they’ve been quietly attracted to. When Kalli asks Cass to look after her 11-year-old daughter Ari while she goes out of town, it seems temporary.

But Kalli doesn’t return.

Suddenly Cass is responsible for a child while barely managing their own life. As the two begin to rely on one another, the situation brings memories of Cass’s own difficult childhood back to the surface.

Writer-director Elena Oxman keeps the focus small and human, building the film around Cass and Ari’s gradually changing relationship and a vivid sense of contemporary San Francisco.

The film premiered in competition at SXSW, with Dillon going on to win Best Performance at Out on Film, while Outerlands collected further prizes at festivals including Munich, Wicked Q***r, Milwaukee and Santa Cruz.

Also starring Louisa Krause, Ridley Asha Bateman, Lea DeLaria and Daniel K. Isaac, this is thoughtful, character-driven independent cinema with a lot of heart.

💋 We’re bringing The Rocky Horror Picture Show back for a special late night screening in memory of Tim Curry.

Tim Curry had an extraordinary career across film, theatre and television. But for generations of moviegoers, there will always be one role that stands apart: Dr Frank-N-Furter.

His performance is fearless, funny, seductive and completely committed, and helped the film become of the most enduring cult films ever made.

Alongside Susan Sarandon, Barry Bostwick, Richard O’Brien, Patricia Quinn and Meat Loaf, Curry leads Brad and Janet through a night of mad science, rock ’n’ roll, sexual liberation and gleeful bad behaviour at the castle of Dr Frank-N-Furter.

More than 50 years later, The Rocky Horror Picture Show remains a film people don’t simply watch. They dress up for it, quote it, sing along with it and introduce it to the next generation.

🎟️ Special advance previews now on sale for Late Fame.

See the new film starring Willem Dafoe and Greta Lee at Deckchair Cinema on Wednesday 4 November and Friday 13 November, ahead of its wider release.

Dafoe plays Ed Saxberger, a New York postal worker who once had very different plans for his life. In his youth, he published a slim collection of poetry, but when literary success never arrived he quietly gave up writing and settled into an ordinary routine.

Decades later, a young admirer appears at his door.

A group of twentysomething writers and artists has discovered Ed’s forgotten book and decided he is an overlooked genius. Suddenly he is being invited to readings, parties and literary gatherings, and finding himself drawn to Gloria, a magnetic and unpredictable performer played by Greta Lee.

But being rediscovered after all these years brings its own complications. How much of the attention is genuine? Is this really a second chance, or are the young artists simply turning Ed’s forgotten past into their latest cultural obsession?

Directed by Kent Jones and written by Samy Burch, the Oscar-nominated screenwriter of May December, Late Fame is funny, thoughtful and beautifully attuned to the strange mixture of ego, insecurity and hope that comes with being noticed.

The film screened at Venice, New York and Sydney Film Festival, with critics singling out Dafoe’s beautifully understated performance. The New Yorker called the film an “exquisitely wry and melancholic” drama.

A lovely choice for anyone who has ever wondered whether it might still be possible to revisit the person they once hoped to become.

Sandra Hüller has become one of the most compelling actors working in European cinema, and Rose gives her a remarkable role to inhabit.

The Anatomy of a Fall and The Zone of Interest star won the Silver Bear for Best Leading Performance at this year’s Berlin International Film Festival for her portrayal of Rose, a scarred and taciturn soldier trying to create a new life in the wreckage of 17th-century Europe.

The Thirty Years’ War has ended when Rose arrives in a remote Protestant village and lays claim to a long-abandoned farm. The villagers are suspicious, but the paperwork appears legitimate, and Rose sets about working the land and trying to earn a place within the community.

There is one problem: the life Rose has built depends on a carefully protected identity.

Inspired by real historical accounts of people crossing the rigid gender boundaries of their time, director Markus Schleinzer turns the story into something much richer than a conventional period drama. It’s about the freedoms attached to gender, property and social status, and the extraordinary compromises required simply to choose your own life.

Shot in stark, beautiful black and white, Rose is severe in places, unexpectedly funny in others, and anchored throughout by Hüller’s fiercely controlled performance.

MIFF compared its exploration of gender privilege to Sally Potter’s Orlando, while Screen International called the film “an elegant, intelligent work.”

🎟️ Special advance preview now on sale!

Be among the first in Darwin to see Wicker at Deckchair Cinema on Saturday 31 October, ahead of its regular screenings in November.

Starring Olivia Colman, Alexander Skarsgård and Peter Dinklage, Wicker is a wonderfully strange new fantasy romance.

Colman plays a prickly fisherwoman living on the edge of a seaside village where everyone seems to have an opinion about the fact that she remains unmarried.

Eventually, she has enough.

She approaches the local basketmaker, played by Peter Dinklage, and commissions exactly what the village thinks she needs: a husband.

What comes back is Alexander Skarsgård, meticulously woven from wicker, impossibly handsome, completely devoted and, rather inconveniently for everyone else, a considerably better partner than most of the actual men in town.

Naturally, the village does not take this well.

Also starring Elizabeth Debicki and Richard E. Grant, Wicker premiered at Sundance before being selected as the Opening Night film at MIFF 2026.

Bill Nighy and Imelda Staunton lead an incredible cast in & Sons, a darkly funny family drama about a very complicated reunion.

Nighy plays Andrew Dyer, a world-famous novelist who has spent almost 20 years shut away from his family following an incident that fractured the Dyer household.

Then, convinced he is about to die, Andrew suddenly summons his estranged sons home.

They arrive expecting apologies, explanations and perhaps finally some kind of reconciliation. Instead, Andrew tells them something so unexpected that it throws their family history, and their understanding of one another, completely off balance.

Alongside Nighy and Staunton, the ensemble includes George MacKay, Johnny Flynn, Noah Jupe and Dominic West, giving the film plenty to work with as old resentment, rivalry and affection start bubbling back to the surface.

Directed by Pablo Trapero and co-written by Sarah Polley, & Sons premiered at TIFF and plays with family drama, black comedy and a genuinely surprising central mystery.

It’s a film about difficult fathers, damaged relationships and the possibility that even after decades of getting things wrong, a family might still have something left to say to one another.

🌿 We’ve reached our final members’ free screening of the year, and we’ve saved a beautiful one for last.

On Tuesday 20 October, Deckchair members can see The Blue Trail free. Members of the general public are also welcome to purchase a ticket for the night.

At 77, Tereza is still working, living independently and perfectly capable of deciding what comes next.

The government disagrees.

In a near future imagined by director Gabriel Mascaro, older citizens are being relocated to isolated colonies so younger generations can supposedly get on with keeping the economy moving. When Tereza receives her relocation order, she refuses to quietly disappear.

Instead, she escapes.

What follows is an unexpected journey through the rivers and tributaries of the Amazon, as Tereza meets strangers, pursues a long-delayed dream and discovers there is still plenty of life left to be lived on her own terms.

Denise Weinberg gives a terrific central performance, alongside Rodrigo Santoro, in a film that won the Silver Bear Grand Jury Prize at Berlin.

Beautifully shot, gently surreal, funny and ultimately very uplifting, The Blue Trail is a fitting way to finish our members’ free screenings for 2026.
