Intercultural describes communities in which there is a deep understanding and respect for all cultures. It focuses on the mutual exchange of ideas & cultural norms and the development of deep relationships. In an intercultural society, everyone learns from one another and grows together.
Who is the Intercultural Action Group:
The Intercultural Action Group was formed in February 2018 as a response to the increasing
multicultural population of the Margaret River region in WA.
Our aim:
• to empower
• to provide support to migrants who are living in Margaret River
• to promote the benefits of cultural diversity within the community of Margaret River
• to plan & organize projects for the community to be inclusive
• to offer support mechanisms for newly arrived and established people in the region
Yen Hawkes (Singaporean) & Ellen Lahti (Finnish) are the co-founders of Intercultural Action Group which was formed in February 2018
We are approved individual members of Harmony Alliance in May 2018
Intercultural Action Group is a network supporter of Welcoming Cities since June 2018 (Welcoming Cities is a national network of cities, shires, towns and municipalities who are committed to an Australia where everyone can belong and participate in social, cultural, economic and civic life. The network is also part of a growing international movement of more than 135 municipalities in New Zealand, the Americas and Europe)
Intercultural Action Group is a network supporter of FECCA since June 2018 (FECCA is the peak, national body representing Australians from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds. FECCA's role is to advocate and promote issues on behalf of its constituency to government, business and the broader community)
We launched our first project “Your Story Matters” in June 2018 – where we encouraged migrants to tell their stories and later realized through our face-to-face sharing sessions that the majority of the migrants were experiencing language as their main barrier
We are members of the Naturaliste / Leeuwin District Health Advisory Council in the South West since September 2018 representing Margaret River
We are members of the Community Access and Inclusion Reference Group (CAIRG) since July 2018
We partnered with Augusta Margaret River Shire and launched “Hello Margaret River” in February 2019. What is Hello Margaret River? It is a handy flyer to assist new arrivals to Margaret River area. It includes a list of local services and information available to help new arrivals settle into the region. It is useful for the whole community of Margaret River.
We designed and launched our Intercultural Action Group T-shirt and Calico bag in September 2018
In October 2018, we launched Building Bridges which aims to bring the community together to be empowered, to explore, to share, to learn, to listen and most importantly, to have FUN!
We were invited for a radio interview with Dee Salmin from ABC Southwest on 25 March 2019 to talk about Hello Margaret River and Intercultural Action Group – our future plans
We have partnered with Augusta Margaret River Shire and Margaret River Library for a Harmony Day celebration event on Thursday, 21 March 2019 – Colourfest Film Festival 2019 “Australian Stories”
We have partnered with Jobs South West (JSW) to run FREE workshops for the community to get them Job Ready in May & June 2019
We are approved members of ConnectGroups since 27 May 2019 - ConnectGroups promotes the philosophy and practice of peer support throughout Western Australia
We have partnered with local artist Dr Michael Wise for a community arts project using recycled materials to create paperdolls; Wednesday 29 May 2019 at the Church Gallery @ The Community Centre Margaret River
We are onboard the Busselton Jetty Multicultural Working Group Committee since June 2019
Our biggest milestone was when Intercultural Action Group was incorporated on 26 July 2019
