Let's Meet Andrew Nolte,
Charismatic, talented, and passionate, Andrew Nolte is our dapper drummer, spellbinding vocalist, and one of the original forces behind the Capitol Theatre Orchestra.
His love for Jazz Age music began with dusty 78rpm records and grew into a lifelong passion for bringing vibrant, early syncopated sounds back to life. From Melbourne stages to international festivals, film soundtracks, and radio on Steam Radio (3CR), Andrew loves creating magical moments where the music pulls you out of the present and into another time.

Quick Q&A with Mr. Nolte.

1. What do you play?
I play drums and perform vocals.

2. How did you discover this music?
I fell in love with early syncopated music just after leaving high school. Much of it only survived on 78rpm discs. The late Peter Milley encouraged my interests, introducing me to a world of obscure and remarkable music and helping me break into whatever scene existed in Melbourne for performing this music live.

3. Your fondest CTO memories?
Being present at the inception of the Capitol Theatre Orchestra and its forerunners—the DRHJO and the Railway Ramblers. My fondest memories are working alongside extraordinary, dedicated, and colourful musicians and characters, many of whom have since passed, who helped revive the music of the Jazz Age.

4. If you could travel back in time?
I’d tour Melbourne by cable tram, take a motoring trip through the Dandenong Ranges, and enjoy the bustling, nightlife of Windsor and St Kilda at its peak.

5. What do you hope audiences feel?
I hope audiences are, in some small way, transported back in time and come away with an appreciation and empathy for a long forgotten, yet pivotal, moment in social history.
