Did you know in Pentridge Prison’s D Division, daily routines were strictly structured? After meals, tables were removed to allow access to individual cells. Dinner was typically served around 4:30pm, after which prisoners were locked in their cells until the following morning.

Today marks the anniversary of the official closure of Pentridge Prison which closed on 1st May 1997, ceasing all operations as a prison. Most prisoners were relocated to H.M. Prison Barwon.

Photos from the day include the decommissioning ceremony with the Honour Guard arrival and audience, and the lowering and folding of the Australian flag for the last time.

Built in 1980 as a state-of-the-art maximum-security facility, the Jika Jika division (later K Division) at Pentridge combined innovation, controversy, and tragedy.​ 

From its naming after Woiwurrung elder Billibellary to its brutal 1987 fire, Jika Jika’s story remains one of ​s​significance in Pentridge’s history.​
