UFFA26: Slovo House 🇺🇦

Slovo House is a story about a generation of Ukrainian artists persecuted by the totalitarian system, unfolding against the backdrop of one of the largest genocides of the 20th century - the Holodomor.

Set in 1920s Kharkiv, Taras Tomenko’s Slovo House: Unfinished Novel (2021) is a haunting historical drama that chronicles the tragic fate of the "Executed Renaissance". The film centres on a luxury apartment building commissioned by Stalin to house Ukraine’s greatest literary minds under one roof. What begins as a "communist paradise" for creatives like Mykola Khvylovy and Les Kurbas rapidly descends into a paranoid nightmare of surveillance and state-mandated socialist realism. The arrival of Volodymyr Akimov, an ambitious but talentless newcomer who secretly works as an NKVD informant, accelerates the community’s destruction. As the Soviet regime tightens its grip, the artists face brutal repression, coerced propaganda, and eventual ex*****on.

Shot in atmospheric black-and-white, Tomenko’s feature explores the crushing of Ukrainian cultural identity against the backdrop of the Holodomor genocide, serving as a powerful testament to the resilience of the Ukrainian spirit.

Amid violence and war, Ukrainian citizens are coming together to rescue animals that have been left behind by those forced to flee. From cats and dogs in abandoned buildings to lions and tigers in the nation’s zoos, extraordinary rescue efforts are underway to bring them to safety. The film is a tribute to the very best of the human spirit despite the horrors of war.

UFFA26: U are the Universe

In Pavlo Ostrikov’s debut feature, U Are the Universe (2024), Ukrainian space trucker Andriy Melnyk is on a lonely, multi-year mission transporting nuclear waste to Jupiter’s moon, Callisto. His only companion is Maxim, a witty, sarcastic onboard computer designed to keep his spirits high. This routine existence is shattered when Earth suddenly explodes, leaving Andriy as the presumed last human being alive in the silent cosmos.

Just as he begins to succumb to total isolation, a radio transmission from a French scientist named Catherine reaches him from a distant space station near Saturn. Despite the astronomical distance and the failing state of his vessel, Andriy embarks on a desperate, high-stakes journey across the solar system to reach her. Filmed in Kyiv during the ongoing Russian invasion, Ostrikov crafts a poignant "cosmic love story" that blends deadpan humour with a deep, existential yearning for human connection in the face of total annihilation.
