Arnies Recon. Arnies Recon provides free pick up and recycling of electronics and appliances to homes and business

01/05/2023

While Adrian and I were the face of Arnies, we were privileged to have an exceptional team working behind the scenes. Adriana de Luca, Keith (Buddha) Burnett, Maria Menscheim, Jose de Freitas and Matteo Gallo all went above and beyond to keep the Arnies dream going. We'll miss them all...

It is with great sadness that we announce Arnies Recon is closing its doors effective immediately.

Since mid-February, we experienced drops in volume at our collections and drop offs. After 2 1/2 months of insufficient levels of supply, we could not continue.

Sadly, we have had so many commercial and government organisations interested in partnering with us. Unfortunately, they didn't manifest in time to keep our doors open.

The two of us have poured everything we have into this vision. Personally, we were also exhausted from the amount of energy this particular model of recycling required. We just didn't have any more to give.

There is a lot to celebrate. Mainly, thanks to your support, we've saved over 5500 tonnes of electronics and appliances from landfill.

We were continually amazed and inspired by the love and enthusiasm you have all had for the Arnies mission. This inspired us to continue through some of the toughest moments.

We have amassed a huge bank of knowledge in the last three and a half years. Our commitment to saving electronics from landfill is not dented. We will now look at how we can use what we have learned to continue our commitment to building a more sustainable future.

With love and gratitude,

Lisa and Adrian

Small ways to make an impact #10. Don't fall for green washing hype. Degradable only means it will break down to microplastics.

But, it's made of the same LDPE plastic as single-use plastic bags. They both come from compressing monomer ethylene gas.

So, when it breaks down it releases methane, one of the most potent atmospheric greenhouse gases, and ethylene, which reacts with hydroxide in the atmosphere and increases carbon monoxide concentrations.

While it may be theoretically recyclable, any system processing it must be closed loop to avoid the release of gases. Where you have a choice, use bio-plastics.

Even better, natural fibres.

Small ways to make an impact #12. Stop using single-use plastic bags. No kidding. Please stop. This is what happens to it over time, in and out of landfill.

Smaller particles get into your lungs. They wash into the ocean and are eaten by the fish you then eat. This is in our soil. Microparticles show up in our bloodstream.

The list goes on and on as to the environmental disasters these cause.

Simply bring a canvas bag with you. I’ve had one for 40 years and only had to change the handle 10 years ago. It looks like I bought it yesterday aside from a stain. Will probably outlive me.

If you forget your bag grab a box from the store. Move a few avocados around and you can take the empty. It’s worth a stare or two.

One of the hardest things people have to face is the clean out after their relatives pass away. Especially when they've horded decades of stuff. We're so glad we can at least take some of the burden off their shoulders by taking away the electronics and appliances to be recycled...

A bit of history from today’s collection. A circa 1950’s chart recorder that measured electrical quantities and temperature in power plants.
