Kleber Mendonça Filho directs a rousing and tense political thriller starring Wagner Moura.
Brazil, 1977. It is a “time of spite” for the country as the harsh military dictatorship imposes increasingly draconian measures on the population. Marcelo (Moura), a university professor, is on the run from the regime and takes refuge in Recife, where he hopes to reunite with his son. There, during the week of the Carnaval, he finds a safe haven with a group of outsiders, and takes on an assumed identity. But Marcelo can’t forget that he’s a wanted man – and soon enough he feels the tentacles of the state closing in on him. With all the tension of the best political thrillers, Mendonça Filho brings his trademark melange of styles (and his deep cinephilia) to the picture. The Secret Agent involves body horror, wicked humour, and eroticism, all playing out to a typically tremendous soundtrack. In this detailed, vibrant and expansive portrait of tumultuous time in Brazil’s history – filled with unforgettable, brave characters - Mendonça Filho has made an intoxicating film that is powerfully resonant with our times.
Winner of Best Actor, Best Director and the International Critic’s Prize (Fipresci) at Cannes 2025.

Join MidCoast 2 Tops Landcare, Manning Junior Landcare, and the Taree Film Society for a fun movie night with a special screening of the inspiring new documentary Future Council (2024). Millions of children around the world are frustrated by the lack of action to protect the planet and their future. Until now, their voices have largely been heard through protests on the streets. Future Council flips the script. From the director of 2040 and That Sugar Film, this uplifting and rollicking documentary follows eight young people on the ultimate school excursion — a biofuel-powered bus journey across Europe. Their mission? To understand the planet’s predicament, explore real-world solutions, and take their concerns directly into the boardrooms of some of the world’s most powerful and influential companies. What unfolds is a coming-of-age adventure that blends hope, courage and determination — where School of Rock meets An Inconvenient Truth. Along the way, the children form a “Future Council,” daring to imagine and demand a brighter future for people and planet alike.

A sensation at Cannes and one of Franceʼs biggest box office and audience favourites of the year (achieving over two million admissions and entry into the top five of 2024), writer/director Emmanuel Courcol's wildly entertaining new film follows two very different siblings separated by fate and reunited by their love of music.
Thibaut (the exceptional Benjamin Lavernhe, Delicious, C’est la vie!) is a beloved and internationally celebrated orchestra conductor who travels the globe. When a health crisis and subsequent DNA test inadvertently reveals he was adopted as an infant, Thibaut discovers the existence of a younger brother, Jimmy (rising star Pierre Lottin), who lives in more modest circumstances; he works in a school cafeteria, cares for his mother and plays the trombone in a community brass band. The pair seem to have little else in common other than a love of performance, but sensing his sibling’s exceptional talent, Thibaut decides to remedy the injustice of fate and try to help nurture his brother’s untapped gifts.
An eruptive crowd favourite wherever it has premiered (notably receiving the highest audience score in the 51-year history of the San Sebastian Film Festival), MY BROTHER’S BAND is a rousing, feel-great trip to the cinema, expertly striking the perfect harmony between laughter and tears. Bring your family, your friends, and some tissues.

Taree Film Society goes back to where it all began. Here is the story of the time and scene in movie making when Jean Luc Godard directed Breathless...the movie we chose for our inaugural screening.
Paris, 1959. Les autos Americains, le pinball, les cafes … et les cinephiles who exploded out of the French film magazine Cahiers du Cinema, eager to grasp the chance to turn themselves into directors. No film in this movement would have such impact as Jean-Luc Godard’s A bout de souffle (Breathless).
A few names: Jean-Paul Belmondo, Jean Seberg, Raoul Coutard, Suzanne Shiffman, Pierre Rissient. The rules are simple - throw away everything you think you know about cinema, and reinvent it by shooting on the streets, cramming in as many quotes as possible, making it up as you go along, substituting the dead hand of a staid professionalism with enthusiasm and aphorisms. A few more names hovering around the edges: Truffaut, Chabrol, Rivette, Varda, Demy, Resnais. Even more names of the pioneers who showed them the path: Rossellini, Melville, Cocteau, Bresson. You’ll find them all packed into Richard Linklater’s irrepressible love letter to a moment in film history where suddenly anything now seemed possible.

Winner of the Cannes Grand Prix. Joachim Trier and Renate Reinsve reunite following The Worst Person in the World in this intimate family drama about the power of art. Stellan Skarsgård and Elle Fanning also contribute to an excellent ensemble cast.
The always superb Reinsve (Armand) plays Nora Borg, an accomplished stage actress experiencing deep anxiety about performing. When she and her sister Agnes are reunited with their estranged father, the once-revered director Gustav (Skarsgård), he asks Nora to take the lead role in a new, deeply personal film – his comeback, he hopes. With Gustav having abandoned his family decades prior, Nora angrily declines his artistic overtures. He instead casts eager Hollywood star Rachel Kemp (Fanning), and begins work on the ambitious and risky film. But filial connections run deep, and the personal and the artistic intersect in ways that transcend the practicalities of creation. Profound, funny and deeply moving, Sentimental Value finds Trier at the height of his considerable directorial powers.
“Uncommonly rich in emotional rewards... The movie’s poignancy accumulates gradually, every supple turn expertly modulated as the presence of generations past becomes more tangible.”
David Rooney, The Hollywood Reporter
