Rohmer would seem to have been immune to the excesses of the 1980s, but its breezy culture served his storytelling well. His characters were often at leisure or on vacation, and while you may not want to befriend them all, it’s hard not to walk out of this movie without daydreaming of the world they inhabit. Na het gigantische succes van Flodder moest er wel een vervolg komen. In deze film wordt de excentrieke familie naar de Verenigde Staten verscheept in het kader van een uitwisselingsprogramma voor kansarmen. Alwaar ze in de meest krankzinnige situaties terechtkomen, zelfs met de Amerikaanse president. Dick Maas regisseert met zijn kenmerkende grote gebaren.

To celebrate the day of Belgian independence, CINEMATEK is showing our restored version of Un soir de joie (Gaston Schoukens, Belgium, 1955). It will be preceeded by a short documentary about the Belgian illegal press during the German occupation.

An example of Belgian bravery and based on a real historic event, Un Soir de Joie is a 'zwans' reconstruction of one of the riskiest acts of resistance in Belgian history during the occupation. The resistance wrote, organised and distributed a fake version of the newspaper Le Soir. This version was a satirical publication that outsmarted censorship, while the official Le Soir was under the control of the German occupiers.

This time in the Out of the Inkwell series, Clown Koko pops up in a mix of animation and live-action and crosses paths with a fortune teller (Fortune Teller). Together with Fitz the dog, he puts up posters for their next show… but it is mainly the cats who turn out to be fans (It's the Cats). The friction between the little clown and his creator Max Fleischer reaches a climax, whereupon Max sends him to the year 1999 (Koko in 1999). There, he ends up in a rather bizarre encounter with a hot dog vendor (Koko's Hot Dog).
