CINÉSSENTIAL is a film club committed to screening motion pictures that urge you to think, converse and act. It is established under the auspices of the Ghent Rolin-Jaequemyns International Law Institute (GRILI), as well as the Ghent Institute for International and European Studies (GIES) and the Centre for Cinema and Media Studies (CIMS). The idea was initiated and designed as a platform to highl
ight impactful films that raise important, topical issues related to many disciplines. Every academic semester, we will be screening a set of carefully curated films that engage in essential discussions on international justice, human rights, politics and policy, as well as the environment. An interdisciplinary panel of experts will provide their comments and critique following each screening, after which they will engage in a thought-provoking debate with members of audience. We will strive to include many of our amazing colleagues at Ghent University in these panels, to spotlight their fascinating research and expertise. Cinéssential is hosted in the Filmzaal Plateau, yet travels around in Ghent, and open to the entire UGent family as well as everyone else that is interested in joining the screenings and fruitful discussions we aim to fire up.
