Calgary Cinematheque

Calgary Cinematheque Bringing people together to foster a critical cinema culture. We are Calgary’s year-round champion of challenging and under-represented global cinema.

Curated screenings of artistically significant, historically relevant, and newly rediscovered films in Mohkinstsis. Our eclectic programming features selected films that expand Calgary’s movie-going options to include benchmark retrospectives, classic restorations, masterworks, and acclaimed screen rarities. We curate programs constructed around thematic links, historical or current movements, and

the work of individual artists. Our programming includes overlooked contemporary world cinema, discussion sessions with guest speakers, and community events. We frequently collaborate with other organizations including the University of Calgary, Calgary Underground Film Festival, containR, and Theatre Junction. As a local hub for cinema as an art form, Calgary Cinematheque has a dedicated member base and 800+ subscribers ranging from passionate cinephiles to the simply curious and adventurous among the filmgoing public. We offer Calgarians the chance to experience significant cinema in its full grandeur: on the big screen surrounded by an audience of film lovers. We build community around the enjoyment of cinema art in a shared theatrical experience.

--------------------------

Film is more than the twentieth-century art. It's another part of the twentieth-century mind. It's the world seen from inside. We've come to a certain point in the history of film. If a thing can be filmed, the film is implied in the thing itself. This is where we are. The twentieth century is on film. You have to ask yourself if there's anything about us more important than the fact that we're constantly on film, constantly watching ourselves.

"A hypnotically stylized murder mystery awash in period atmosphere, Chess of the Wind unfolds inside a candlelit mansion, where a web of greed, violence, and betrayal ensnares potential heirs as they vie for control of their matriarch’s estate. Melding the influences of European modernism, gothic horror, and classical Persian art, Mohammad Reza Aslani crafts an exquisitely restrained mood piece that erupts into a subversive final act in which class conventions, gender roles, and time itself are upended with shocking ferocity." - Criterion.

This Thursday experience Chess of the Wind, a film that was almost lost forever, on the big screen.

Screened just once in Iran before the 1979 revolution, the film was swiftly banned and then thought to be lost for decades, with all prints and negatives presumed destroyed. In 2014 the director’s children found the original negative in a Tehran junk shop. After a major restoration, it returned in 2020 to widespread critical acclaim.

So why does Mohsen think you need to see Chess of the Wind the big screen? 🕯️♟️

It’s a beautiful and image driven film and a remarkable rediscovery of Iranian new wave film cinema.

The first lady of a noble house has died and now there is conflict between the remainders for taking over her inheritance.

Programmed by committee member, Mohsen Nasrin: "one of the most hauntingly original works in Iranian cinema....The film’s title becomes its guiding metaphor: like chess, every move is calculated; like the wind, every position is unstable. With painterly compositions inspired by Persian art, dim lighting, and suffocatingly still frames, Chess of the Wind transforms its setting into a visual prison, one where moral decay mirrors the collapse of a broader social order."

Big Screen Bucket List continues with Mohsen's pick, Chess of the Wind.

Barry Lyndon is one of those films you just have to see on the big screen. Every frame is beautifully composed, with visuals that look like 18th-century paintings. Beyond that, its slow pace and dry wit draw you into a fascinating story of ambition, class, and the pursuit of status. It's the kind of film that rewards your full attention.

Catch it this Thursday as part of our Big Screen Bucket List series! 👑⚔️🕯️
