The Labour Day long weekend is here, and if you’ve been thinking about one more summer adventure, there’s no better time to see the Falls.

And while you’re here, remember that Niagara has always attracted people looking for adventure… sometimes the really dangerous kind! 😳

On September 5, 1927, Australian daredevil Vincent Taylor parachuted from the Upper Steel Arch Bridge over Niagara Falls.

Yes, you read that right. He jumped from a bridge… with a parachute… over Niagara Falls. 🤯

So come see the Falls, enjoy the long weekend, and discover some of the incredible stories that have made Niagara famous for generations.

It has watched Indigenous peoples travel its waters, explorers arrive in search of new worlds, daredevils test their luck, millions of visitors stand in awe, and generations of families make memories along its shores.

So here’s a question for you:

If you could go back and witness one moment in Niagara’s history, what would it be?

We recently told you about Blondin, the legendary tightrope walker who crossed Niagara Gorge and became one of the most famous daredevils in history.

After Blondin there was Ontario native William Leonard Hunt, “The Great Farini”. He was inspired by Blondin's earlier walks and decided to follow in his footsteps—quite literally—by performing high above the Niagara Gorge.

But Farini didn’t just walk the tightrope. He was known for making his performances even more unbelievable. Blindfolded with baskets on his feet, with a man on his back, doing summersaults on the rope and evening doing laundry with a washing machine on his back!

Niagara has always attracted people willing to do the impossible. And The Great Farini was certainly one of them.

If you could step back in time and experience Niagara Falls in any era, which would you choose? 🌊⏳

🛶 The age of exploration — when early explorers first encountered and documented this incredible natural wonder.

🚂 The grand tourist era — when railways and steamships brought visitors to Niagara Falls from around the world.

🎩 The Victorian era — when Niagara was becoming one of North America's most fashionable destinations, complete with grand hotels and spectacular views.

🛢️ The age of the daredevil — when adventurers risked everything for fame, fortune and the chance to conquer the Niagara River.

One of Niagara’s most unbelievable daredevil stunts… 🎪

In August of 1859, Charles Blondin once again took to the tightrope over the Niagara Gorge.

But this time, he wasn't alone.

Blondin crossed the gorge with his manager, Harry Colcord, riding on his back.

It was just one of the incredible stunts Blondin performed during his famous Niagara Falls crossings. He walked the rope, pushed a wheelbarrow, rode a bicycle and continually found new ways to leave the crowds wondering, “What could he possibly do next?”

How Far Did We Go to Get It Right? 🎬

Yesterday, we shared the history of the boat that appears in Niagara: Miracles, Myths & Magic.

Today, here’s what went into recreating that history for the film.

The filmmakers didn't simply build a boat that looked like the historic Lelawala and film it somewhere that could pass for the Niagara River.

They built a full-scale reproduction, obtained the extraordinary permissions required to put it on the river — and then actually sent it into the Niagara River rapids.

On October 3, 1986, the boat was navigated through the swirling rapids as the filmmakers recreated the June 6, 1861 journey. The original vessel had made the difficult journey toward Lake Ontario and damaged its smokestack along the way.

And there wasn't just a camera pointed at an empty boat. A stuntman actually rode aboard the vessel during the filming!

Think about what that required: a historically accurate reproduction, a stunt performer, a film crew, specialized equipment and a series of special permissions to take all of it into the Niagara River.

This wasn't Hollywood magic created somewhere else and made to look like Niagara.

They actually did it on the Niagara River.

The lengths the production went to for historical accuracy are remarkable — and the special permissions granted for this filming have, according to the production history, never been granted again.

Nearly 40 years later, you can still see the result on the big screen.

🌊 Niagara Falls has been drawing tourists for a very, very long time.

Long before tour buses, souvenir shops and packed hotels, people were travelling to Niagara Falls by train, by boat, by carriage and on foot.

In the 1850s, Niagara Falls was becoming a major tourist destination, and one of the best ways to experience the Falls was aboard the steamship “Lelawala”.

But in 1861, everything changed. The owner was facing financial difficulties, and with the American Civil War approaching, the boat was sold at auction to a Canadian company.

With one condition: it had to be delivered to Lake Ontario.
There was just one small problem…The route to Lake Ontario meant taking the boat through the Great Gorge Rapids, the Whirlpool and the Lower Rapids. 🌊

On June 6, 1861, Captain Joel Robinson and his crew took on the challenge, with hundreds of spectators lining the river to watch.
The journey was every bit as wild as you might imagine — but somehow, battered and missing its smokestack, the boat made it through.

It sounds almost too incredible to be true — but it happened.

The Lelawala made its incredible journey in 1861. 125 years later, we decided to do something almost as crazy: recreate it.

How we filmed it is a story all its own. 🌊🎥

🌊 After sharing the stories of Major Hill and Red Hill Jr., it only seemed fitting to go back to the beginning — Red Hill Sr., the man who started it all. Whose name would become legendary along the Niagara River.

Red Hill Sr. spent much of his life patrolling the Niagara River, where he rescued boats, people and animals caught in the river’s powerful currents. He also took on the grim task of retrieving victims from the river.

His record is remarkable: Red Hill Sr. rescued 28 people and retrieved 177 bodies from the Niagara River.

But he wasn't just a rescuer. Red Hill Sr. ran the Niagara Rapids three times — first at the age of 23, and again at 42 and 43 years old.

His courage, knowledge of the river and willingness to risk his own life to help others earned him a place in Niagara’s history — and eventually, his family would continue that legacy in some of the most daring and dangerous ways imaginable.

🌊 On this day in 1950, Major Lloyd Hill took on the mighty Niagara Whirlpool Rapids... and won.

After yesterday's post about his brother, William "Red" Hill Jr., today we're celebrating another member of Niagara's legendary Hill family.

On August 6, 1950, Major Lloyd Hill climbed into a specially designed steel barrel and entered the raging Whirlpool Rapids. Battling violent currents and spinning through the famous Whirlpool twice, Major emerged victorious after an incredible 2-hour and 45-minute journey—setting a faster time than his brother's earlier run.
