🍀ETHNOKINO DOCUMENTARY FILM AWARD 2026

Turning Land into Capital: Historical Conjectures of the (Re-)Production of Wealth in Latin America

As part of the international research project Turning Land into Capital. Historical Conjectures of the (Re-)Production of Wealth in Latin America, a documentary film award will be presented in 2026 to outstanding films that critically engage with the reproduction of wealth through land in Latin America.

The research project examines key historical conjunctures of land concentration by wealthy elites and how these dynamics continue to shape today’s profoundly unequal patterns of wealth production in the region.

Filmmakers are especially encouraged to adopt a longer historical perspective, focusing on the period from the 1860s to the 1929 World Economic Crisis, and
the era from the 1980s to the present. Both periods laid crucial foundations for today’s unequal patterns of wealth (re-)production.

✨STARS PARADE✨

Johanna Suheyla Hillebrand’s magical performance “An Invitation to the Rain” during 5th EthnoKino Film Festival in Cappadocia (2-5 August/ Haunted Bards Valley / Perili Ozanlar Vadisi).

Johanna Suheyla is a singer-songwriter based in Penzance, Cornwall, with a lifelong love for stories, folk and fairy tales. On open-tuned guitar and 5-string banjo, she writes honest and sometimes personal songs plucked out of life around her, her own experiences and the endless stream of stories playing in her head. She writes poetry that sometimes turns into lyrics and finds it nearly impossible to write a song on purpose.

Today come meet Prof.Ton Otto an Athropologist from Aarus University (Denmark) who will be delivering a ✨Magic✨ Masterclass at 18PM at during film festival:

✨The Magic of Film and Exhibition Making when Dealing with Death✨

Death remains one of the universal enigmas of human life. What happens after our biological demise? What kinds of afterlife are imaginable? How do we continue to relate to our dead loved ones? In many cultures magic and ritual are used to tame the fear of dying, to postpone death or to inflict it, and to make the transition to another world possible. I am interested to study how people in different cultures deal with the enigma of death and I wish to share my insights with a wide audience.

Like many others, I observe that people in modern secularized societies often have problems dealing with death and see it as the enemy to be defeated rather than a part of life to be carefully attended to. I believe that listening to and trying to understand other cultural worlds will have a positive influence for all involved. In order to have an impact with my research I use the modern magic of two powerful media of communication: film and exhibition making.

In this masterclass I discuss and compare two recent productions, the exhibition The lives of the dead (Moesgaard Museum 2014-2023) and the film On behalf of the living (DER 2025), to find out how we can cast a spell by immersive, sensory, participative and interventionist methods.

Come meet the Visionary Prof. and his Keynote Vision Talk on The future of İndigenous People’s Cinema ✨✨✨

Oral histories and cinema. Mediums separated by a time frame. Imagine once they are merged. Cinema which began as a vaudeville attraction has emerged in the last century as the biggest audio-visual medium of expression. It has spanned cultures, societies and touched millions of lives. A critical point to be noted is the depiction of Indigenous Peoples in cinema. Most depictions across various countries have stereotyped them as backward, savages, primitive, very much steeped in colonial anthropological tropes. However, such depictions have been challenged in the last 20 years or so. Thanks to technological advancement, Indigenous filmmakers are increasingly making their own films, sharing their own stories and challenging age-old stereotypes. The future of Indigenous Peoples Cinema has the potential to shine as a beacon of cultural sovereignty, creative empowerment, and global resonance. They can weave narratives that honor ancestral wisdom, reclaim histories, and imagine bold futures. This talk will explore how Indigenous filmmakers can not only shape the screen but also redefine the very essence of global cinema, fostering a world that sees, hears, and celebrates the richness of Indigenous perspectives.

Meet Filmmaker the creator of Guru Padmasambhava: The Second Buddha at on the 10th of September ✨✨✨

Traversing centuries of Tibetan Buddhist lore, this film brings to life the fascinating story of Guru Padmasambhava – one of the greatest Buddhist teachers from the Indian sub-continent. Also referred to as Guru Rinpoche, he is credited with establishing the Buddha Dharma in Tibet in the 8th century, as well as initiating the ‘Nyingma Lineage’, that continues to be acknowledged as the oldest school of Buddhism to still be followed in the Himalayan regions of present-day Pakistan, India, Bhutan, Nepal and Mongolia.

For many of us who know of Tibetan Buddhism through its most prominent contemporary teacher, His Holiness The Dalai Lama, this film offers a comprehensive look at its origins, and the elements that make Vajrayana, the ‘third’ vehicle of Buddhism, so unique.

Featuring the world-renowned Buddhist gurus, H.E. Yongey Mingyur Rinpoche and H.H. The 12th Chamgon Kenting Tai Situpa, this cinematic biography captures not just the life and spiritual attainments of ‘The Second Buddha’, but also the heart of his teachings, that continue to hold lessons for contemporary curious minds.

Aparna Sanyal has worked extensively on documentaries and docu-series for Indian & international television, OTTs and independently. Over the years, her work has taken her through a wide variety of subjects, including history, economics, the performing arts, education, gender and sexuality, but Buddhism and mental health remain preoccupations. Her films and series have been screened at various festivals, and won multiple awards.
