Our artistic director, Stefanie Schulte Strathaus, has been invited to speak at this year’s Mosse Lecture on Friday, October 16.
The title says it all: Curating Living Archives. Stefanie will discuss her international collaborations at the Arsenal and her entire career, which has been dedicated to film curation, restoration projects, and building partnerships with film communities in Guinea-Bissau, Nigeria, Egypt and Sudan. Joining her for a discussion will be Susan Oxtoby, head of the film department and senior film curator at BAMPFA, and Deniz Göktürk, professor of German and film studies at UC Berkeley.
The film program presented by Stefanie begins on Wednesday, October 14, with Remembering Harun Farocki, including a new restoration of EXPRMNTL 4 KNOKKE by Claudia von Alemann and Reinold E. Thiel (West Germany, 1968).
Other screenings she will present include SAD SONG OF TOUHA by Atteyat Al Abnoudy (Egypt, 1972) and THE DISLOCATION OF AMBER by Hussein Shariffe (Sudan, 1975), both recently restored by Cimatheque Cairo (Thursday, October 15), and SHAIHU UMAR by Adamu Halilu (Nigeria 1976), restored by Arsenal in 2016. (Sunday, October 18).
The Mosse Lectures at UC Berkeley are public humanities events with a focus on the cultural significance of visual and other media. The series is organized by the UC Berkeley Department of German with support from The Mosse Foundation and the George L. Mosse Program in History at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Co-presenting partners include the BAMPFA – Berkeley Art Museum & Pacific Film Archive and the German Historical Institute.
