A FLOR DO BURITI - This year’s Portuguese Cinema Days in Berlin came to a close with an extraordinary journey into the land of the Krahô people, alongside filmmakers Renée Nader Messora and João Salaviza.
The film moved us deeply with its authenticity and its intimate portrayal of Krahô life. The conversation that followed with both directors made the experience even more enriching. A beautiful way to bring the Portuguese film festival to an end — truly on a high note ✨

🎥 In Amazonia, the Krahô people resist efforts to erase their culture and land, guided by ancestral rites and love of nature. The film blends ethnography and poetic narrative, exploring tradition, resistance, trauma, and resilience through the lives of Patpro, her daughter Jotàt, and shaman brother Hyino.

The special session of the Portuguese Cinema Days in Berlin, celebrating the centenary of José Cardoso Pires, opened with the screening of “Sombras Brancas,” by Fernando Vendrell, a moving and visually striking film featuring an amazing performance by Rui Morrison. It was perfectly rounded off with a lively session as Ana Cardoso Pires, one of the writer’s daughters, offered to answer the public’s questions in a session playfully titled “Everything You Always Wanted to Know About José Cardoso Pires (and Were Afraid to Ask).”
The evening wrapped up deliciously with one of the writer’s favorite drinks and a homemade “bola de carne” baked by Ana.

🎥 At 71 years old, notable writer José Cardoso Pires suffers a stroke which affects his discourse and his ability to interact with the world around him. Unable to communicate, the writer no longer recognizes words; he can no longer articulate them or even write them down. Sombras Brancas is a narrative about overcoming disease, a clear manifesto on coming back to life and a reconciliation with the world through the writing of José Cardoso Pires. This is a free and original adaptation of the writer’s unique oeuvre DE PROFUNIDS, VALSA LENTA; and an act of homage to its author.

At the Portuguese Cinema Days in Berlin, we had the chance to see the remarkable and deeply human thriller by André Marques, filmed in Setúbal: O Bêbado / The Drunk.
An engaging conversation with the director was perfectly rounded off with a glass of – what else could it be? – Moscatel de Setúbal.
