Since its first edition in 1997, the super8 festival dresdner schmalfilmtage has become a classic among the few special super8 festivals that in depth dedicate to the great little films with their exceptional aesthetic value. Without any trait of dogmatism, the festival presents historical material and new creations originally shot on film stock ranging from 8mm to 16mm as well as the always popular 8mm trash versions of “big” movies. Covering the whole spectrum from renowned and highly artistic works to treasures from the broad field of amateur home movies, dresdner schmalfilmtage brings to attention a significant and vital part of modern media culture that is still very often neglected by cinemas, film festivals and museums. For that reason the low budget festival in Dresden has turned into an international meeting place for filmmakers, artist, collectors and cinephiles over the last ten years.

films of all genres can be submitted to the International Competition Super8/16 at dresdner schmalfilmtage. The films have to be produced in combination with 8 or 16 mm formats, in an independent production since 2024, and are not longer than 20 minutes.

International Found Footage Competition
Until October 31, 2026
In cooperation with the Filmverband Sachsen (Saxony Film Association) the dresdner schmalfilmtage awards again prizes for works that deal with film and heritage. For the International Found Footage Competition works can be submitted, which deal with archive material in the film formats 8mm or 16mm. Whether including archival footage, a new score or mixing original sound with new footage – there are no set limitations concerning the engagement with historical film material. The films have to be produced in an independent production since 2024, and are not longer than 20 minutes.

The special prize was initiated in 2018 by FILMVERBAND SACHSEN e. V. in the framework of his project "Audiovisual Heritage in Saxony" with the support of the Saxon State Ministry for Science and the Arts (SMWK). For more information, see www.filmverband-sachsen.de

Du hast Lust auf Schmalfilm, Festivalatmosphäre und darauf, hinter die Kulissen eines internationalen Filmfestivals zu schauen?
Für die 28. dresdner schmalfilmtage suchen wir Menschen ab 18 Jahren, die Lust haben, sich einzubringen, Neues auszuprobieren und gemeinsam mit uns das Festival zu gestalten.

In diesen Bereichen kannst du dich einbringen:

FILME SICHTEN
Für unsere Wettbewerbe suchen wir Menschen, die Lust haben, eingereichte Filme zu sichten und zu bewerten. Vorkenntnisse sind nicht nötig.

BAR, EINLASS & TICKETKONTROLLE
Während des Festivals kannst du uns an der Bar, beim Einlass oder bei der Ticketkontrolle unterstützen und dabei Festivalatmosphäre, Publikum und internationale Filmemacher:innen kennenlernen.

PROGRAMM UMSETZEN & MODERIEREN
Unterstütze uns bei der Vorbereitung und Durchführung einzelner Programmpunkte. Dabei kannst du Verantwortung übernehmen und eigene Kenntnisse und Erfahrungen einbringen.
