With François Ozon’s spin on The Stranger, Albert Camus’ existentialist nightmare, still fresh, Algerian documentarian Malek Bensmaïl’s debut dramatic feature offers an ideal companion piece. A post-colonial reworking of the already slippery text, it stars the late Ahmed Benaïssa as an old man who claims, to a drunken reporter (Nabil Asli), that he is the real-life brother of the unnamed ‘Arab’ murdered in the Camus. As reality and fiction blur, friction ensues in this mystery that also features Palestinian star Hiam Abbass, who also appears in Palestine 36 in this year’s SFF program.

The Arab de Malek Bensmail reçoit la Mention Spéciale Youth Award au festival Flamand MOOOV Film Festival.

À propos de The Arab, le jury a déclaré : « Ce film nous a profondément touchés et nous a tellement marqués tout au long du parcours qu'il a fini par servir d'étalon de mesure pour les autres films. C'est un drame attachant qui donne un visage à quelqu'un qui, auparavant, n'avait jamais eu de nom".

Malek Bensmail’s *The Arab* has received the Youth Award Special Mention at the Flemish MOOOV Film Festival.

Regarding *The Arab*, the jury stated: "This film touched us deeply and stayed with us so much throughout the journey that it eventually served as a benchmark for all other films. It is an engaging drama that gives a face to someone who previously never had a name."
