In April 2013, The Birks Cinema re-opened its doors to the public as a wee friendly state-of-the art cinema, after a 20 year interlude. This followed a determined fundraising campaign by The Friends of The Birks Cinema which brought in generous support and donations from the Big Lottery Fund, the Scottish Rural Development Program, Creative Scotland, and many other donors, including a huge number of Highland Perthshire residents. Together, they raised the £2.2 million necessary to purchase The Birks Cinema building and bring it back to life as a community hub, while retaining its iconic Art-Noveau exterior. Since then, The Birks Cinema Trust has worked hard at developing a friendly local community hub, both commercially and socially. One person's pre-loved item is another person's treasure! 💎✨

The Birks Cinema has taken over the Thrift Shop this week, and our lovely volunteers have been busy filling the shelves with all sorts of treasures!
From cast iron lamps with a rather grand past (from a local castle! 🏰) to beautiful Hornsea ceramic cups and a painting of the Lake of Menteith, there's plenty to catch your eye. And who knows what else you might discover?

We're here until Saturday, and every penny raised goes towards supporting The Birks Cinema Trust! ❤️

From Scottish landscapes to beautiful still lifes—discover the world of William Gillies! 🎨

Our monthly Art Appreciation Group returns to The Birks on Monday, 19 October, and this time we're exploring the life and work of renowned Scottish painter William Gillies.

🖼️ We're delighted to welcome Andrew McPherson, Emeritus Professor of Sociology at the University of Edinburgh, who has spent many years researching Gillies and has published two books about his life and work. Gillies studied at Edinburgh College of Art before going on to teach there for over 40 years, eventually becoming its Principal.
